Discrimination and Mental Health Among Gay, Lesbian, and Bisexual Youths in Portugal: The Moderating Role of Family Relationships and Optimism
This study investigates associations between mental health, perception of discrimination (unfair treatment and personal rejection), and family environment dimensions—satisfaction, intimacy, admiration, and conflict in the relationships with the mother and the father, and familial optimism—in a sample of 84 gay, lesbian, and bisexual (GLB) Portuguese adolescents. Results show that participants with higher levels of mental health experience less di…

The Challenges of Being a Rural Gay Man: Coping with Stigma
Gay men often face struggles in the conservative world of rural life, due to the pervasive social stigmas associated with homosexuality and the lack of anonymity in a small-town setting. In this book, Preston and D’Augelli present the results of in-depth interviews and surveys with rural gay men, providing unique and hitherto unknown perspectives on their experiences coping with intolerance. With sensitivity and humor, the authors narrate their a…
Restoring Lives: Developmental Research on Sexual Orientation
When I first started reading the psychological literature on homosexuality nearly 25 years ago, several omissions were painfully evident. On the positive side, studies were no longer focusing on whether or not lesbian, gay, and bisexual people were mentally disordered; their minds had been rescued from psychopathology with the 1973 removal of homosexuality from the official list of mental disorders. However, the literature I read about 'homosexua…

How Depressed and Suicidal Sexual Minority Adolescents Understand the Causes of Their Distress
This study examined how lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) adolescents reporting clinically significant depressive and suicidal symptoms understand the causes of their psychological distress. The role of the quality of the adolescent-parent relationship as a risk or protective factor was explored. Ten qualitative interviews were analyzed using the Consensual Qualitative Research method. Results showed that adolescents viewed family rejection of sex…
Aspects of Psychological Resilience among Transgender Youth

More than two-thirds of youth reported past verbal abuse by their parents or peers related to their gender identity and nonconformity, and approximately one-fifth to one-third reported past physical abuse. The more gender non-conforming the youth were, the more abuse they reported. Four…

Few adjustment indicators were associated with parental or s…

Three-quarters felt different from other youth as they were growing up. Two-thirds were considered gender atypical by others, at about age 8. Over…

The Relationship of Stigma to the Sexual Risk Behavior of Rural Men Who Have Sex with Men
Most studies of risky sexual behaviors of men who have sex with men (MSM) have been conducted in cities. Few have documented risky sexual behavior of rural men despite increases in rural HIV. Fewer have addressed stigma and risk. This study explored the effects of stigma on sexual risk behavior among rural MSM. We hypothesized that stigma emanating from families, health care providers, and the communities of rural MSM would indirectly affect thei…

Using structural equation modeling, the present study models both antecedents and consequences …
