  • Introduction to the templatic verb morphology of Birhor (Birhoɽ), a Kherwarian Munda language

    Open Access•Gregory D S Anderson, Bikram Jora•ARTICLE•Language and Linguistics 語言暨語言學•2021

Birhor (Birhoɽ) is a Kherwarian Munda language spoken in small enclaves in India, primarily in Hazaribagh, Ranchi, and Singhbhum districts and other small pockets in Jharkhand state. Birhor has to date been poorly documented, and even the basic properties of its core grammatical systems remain largely undescribed. All data used in this study come from field notes collected in several trips dating back to 2015. This paper is a preliminary attempt …

  • Auxiliary Verb Constructions (and Other Complex Predicate Types)

    Open Access•Gregory D S Anderson•ARTICLE•Language and Linguistics Compass•2011

This paper presents an overview of a typology of auxiliary verb constructions (AVCs) and other complex predicate types. A brief semantic, inflectional and diachronic or developmental typology of AVCs is proposed. This includes an overview and exemplification of the basic functional semantic contrasts expressed by AVCs, as well as how inflectional categories are distributed throughout the sub‐types of constructions attested. How AVCs differ from o…

  • Auxiliary verb constructions in the languages of Africa

    Open Access•Gregory D S Anderson, Gregory D Anderson•ARTICLE•Studies in African Linguistics•2011•Cited by: 2

Auxiliary verb constructions–constructions with two or more elements of verbal origin, one of which expresses functional semantic categories–are widespread among the languages of Africa. In the following discussion, I present a typology of inflection in auxiliary verb constructions [AVCs] in the languages of Africa. While there are several macro-patterns of distribution seen in the various African languages, only a small selection are presented i…

  • Auxiliary Verb Constructions

    Gregory D S Anderson•BOOK•Auxiliary verb constructions•2006

A survey of the auxiliary verb construction. Drawing on a database of over 800 languages, this book examines their morphosyntactic forms and semantic roles. It investigates and explains the historical changes leading to the cross-linguistic diversity of inflectional patterns, and presents its results within a typological framework.
