The blame-avoiding effect of sanction-based accountability and its boundary conditions
Drawing on a reputation-based approach to public accountability, we conducted a series of survey experiments (N = 1,677) to test whether account-holders can mitigate blame by punishing account-givers. Results show that punishment reduces blame toward account-holders. The blame-avoiding effect depends on (1) policy outcomes, being stronger when outcomes worsen; (2) trust in account-holders, weakening when audiences distrust them; and (3) types of …

Multilevel models are co…
Estimating mechanisms linking relative income to self-rated health by multilevel modeling
Income-health gradients vary in societies with diverse cultures and healthcare access levels, and generalized trust in unknown resources of health services may play a crucial role in these gradients. Multilevel models using a sample of 152,501 respondents from 89 societies are conducted to investigate the mediation effect of generalized trust in the correlation between relative income and self-rated health globally, and the moderating role of hea…

Regional differences of agricultural total factor carbon efficiency in China
China’s agriculture has struggled over the past century to produce more food to feed the country’s expanding population while also contending with high-intensity pollution. In order to support China’s transition to low-carbon agriculture more efficiently, it is important to improve the efficiency of agricultural carbon emissions. This study employs the biennial weight modified Russell model to investigate China’s agricultural total factor carbon …

Visualising global currents of international students between 1999 and 2018
The flows of international students are like the currents of the oceans, not only affecting the individuals adrift in them but the global circulation of policy, economics and academics as a whole, bearing pros and cons for each country or region along the way. To date, there has not been a detailed and elaborate description of the fluxes of international students over decades. In light of the research gap, the article utilises the chord diagram t…
