  • Choices and Wayfaring in Higher Education – Bachelor students’ movements between individual perspectives and institutional constraints

Open Access•Katia Bill Nielsen, Lars Ulriksen•ARTICLE•Studies in Higher Education•2025

Within higher education research, the topic of choosing has mainly concerned young peoples’ choices of whether or not to enter higher education and their choice of study programme. However, a study programme is often not a fixed package. Nevertheless, choices within higher education has received comparably little attention. This study unpacks second-year students’ experiences of choosing, and it explores how they navigate these choices. Drawing o…

  • The historic importance of degree structure: A comparison of bachelor to master transitions in Norway and Denmark

Open Access•Elisabeth Hovdhaugen, Lars Ulriksen•ARTICLE•European Journal of Educational…•2023

The Bologna process and the 3+2-degree structure presents students with several decision points in higher education, both which bachelor’s programme to choose, and whether to continue beyond bachelor. Based on a small-scale survey containing both closed and open-ended questions, this paper studies reasons the students give for entering a master’s programme. We compare students in Norway and Denmark who have entered a master’s programme in educati…

  • Students’ choices and paths in the Bologna degree structure: An introduction to the special issue

    Open Access•Lars Ulriksen•ARTICLE•European Journal of Educational…•2023

Twenty years after the signing of the Bologna Declaration, this special issue contributes to a discussion of the Bologna process with a particular focus on the implementation of the two-cycle degree structure (3+2) and the practices and paths of higher education students. In this introduction, it is argued that there is a need for more research concerning the policy as text, that is, the way the Bologna process is enacted by students and teachers…

  • Following rhythms and changing pace–Students’ strategies in relation to time in higher education

Katia Bill Nielsen, Lars Ulriksen•ARTICLE•Teaching in Higher Education•2023

Studies of time and higher education emphasize how macro-level changes influence everyday university practices and how time is experienced and perceived in various ways. This paper adds to these studies by looking at time as infrastructure. We explore how students relate to time and unpack the challenges caused by the temporal structure of higher education. The analysis presents material from ethnographic fieldwork carried out with students follo…

  • Exploration Works on the Right Bank of the Ob River in 2021

    Open Access•Ivan D Zolnikov, A А Anoikin et al.•ARTICLE•Problems of Archaeology…•2021

The article describes the results of exploration works in the lower reaches of the Ob (Shuryshkarsky district of the YNAO) in 2021. The coastline of the right bank of the Ob was studied in three main areas: near the villages of Khashgort, Kushevat and the Sormas channel. In total, 13 pits and 2 excavation trenches were made with a total area of 70 sq. m. The coastline near the village of Khashgort revealed paleofaunal materials and stone artifact…

  • Balancing Time - University Students' Study Practices and Policy Perceptions of Time

    Open Access•Lars Ulriksen, Christoffer Nejrup•ARTICLE•Sociological Research Online•2021•Cited by: 4•References: 18

A particular concern in Danish higher education policy is how much time students spend studying, often addressed as 'study intensity' (defined as number of hours per week spent studying). This article discusses this concept and explores how students perceive the time they spend studying. We draw on ethnographic fieldwork, interviews and workshops among second-year students at four study programmes at a Danish research-intensive university: two in…

  • The implied student

    Lars Ulriksen•ARTICLE•Studies in Higher Education•2009•Cited by: 11•References: 5

This article introduces the concept of ‘the implied student’, through which the author discusses the complex issue of the expectations of students, teachers, the institutions and the educational system, and the encounter between them. The implied student is an analytical concept, not an empirical substance. The analytical potential of the concept is suggested through a tentative analysis of a study programme in the natural sciences at a Danish un…
