On Reparative Science
Through a radical re‐reading of Orlando Fals Borda's conceptualization of participatory action research (PAR), I argue that PAR is more adequately grounded within the broader Fals Bordian framing of ciencia popular , defined as science for, with, and propelled by social movements. I problematize key elements of Fals Borda's works that illuminate the historical silencing of feminist thought and street‐level movement leaders of the Colombian left. …

Adolescent trajectories in situations of adversity
The context in which youths grow up influences the lives they are capable of living. Using a mixed‐methods approach, this study analyses the risk and promotive factors associated with educational and leadership outcomes in Colombian youth. Results suggest that poverty and inadequate social services are key obstacles to the attainment of positive school and leadership outcomes, while parental involvement is among the most important promotive facto…
Reflections on activism, the academy and the Non-Profit Industrial Complex in Colombia
This essay brings together different voices to reflect on several participatory research projects carried out in Colombia, based on human rights, 'empowerment', harm reduction, (im)mobility and forced migration, gendered and political violence, armed conflict, and the right to health of people in the social margins. We look back on nine years of activism to explore the foundations of what our friendships and relationships have come to know as a r…

The Health Equity Network of the Americas (HENA) is a multidisciplinary network that promotes knowledge sharing and intersectoral action for equity in health and human rights in the Americas. Conceptual Debates on Poverty Measurement
Growing Up Guerreándola”
In this article, we argue that we have much to learn from the adolescent developmental experiences of social justice activists on the frontlines. Our team of authors includes the four youth social leaders at the center of the empirical work emerging from our qualitative research. We ground the Freirean concept of conscientização, roughly interpreted in English as critical consciousness building, in the lived experiences of these four youth social…
I feel safer in the streets than at home’
Through qualitative data collected with women affected by drug use and drug-related violence in Bogotá, this article explores the convergence of harm reduction rationales and violence prevention programming in the urban margins to advocate for women's health empowerment and health rights as victims of intergenerational trauma and violence. We propose a methodological shift of public health praxis from street-based outreach models to intimate spac…
We will always be street’
I have learned much about the limits and transformative potential of the street, la calle, as a site of struggle from and with radical organizations fighting against state violence in the urban global South. In this essay, I draw from these experiences as I continue to accompany various street-level social movements in Colombia and Uganda. I draw attention to the street as a site where state violence is enacted in tangible forms across scales. I …
Pushing the Limits of Child Participation in Research
Background: Violence against children (VAC) in Uganda is recognized as an urgent dilemma; however, most research has been quantitatively oriented and has seldom involved children in the research process. Objective: We discuss what we learned about child participation in the research process as a means of informing ethical praxis in future child- and youth-led research initiatives. As an overarching aim of this paper, we utilize our engagement wit…
Examining intersections between violence against women and violence against children
Findings suggest interventions that systemically consider families' struggles with relocation and violence with multifaceted attention to socioecological intersections
The Transformative Potential of Strategic Partnerships to Form a Health Equity Network of the Americas
Health inequities across the Americas are avoidable and unjust yet continue to persist. Systemic social determinants of health, which could be addressed at the policy level, are root causes of many inequities and prevent marginalized individuals and at-risk populations from reaching optimal health and well-being. In this article, we describe our approach to promote health equity through the intersectoral partnerships that were forged, and strate…

Child vs. Household MPIs in Colombia
Empathy at Knifepoint
In this paper, I discuss the ways I have fallen short as a participatory geographer and activist both in my teaching and research practices. I use three critical moments in the development of our PAR collective in Colombia to push debates in geography on participatory research and pedagogy further through reflection on my struggles in the streets and in the university. Additionally, I connect these experiences and previous discussions in particip…
Stigma-related access barriers and violence against trans women in the Colombian healthcare system
Drawing from qualitative research conducted in a participatory action research framework with 28 transgender women in Colombia, this paper presents the stigma-related barriers to healthcare experienced by trans women and their experiences of multi-level violence within the healthcare system. The authors also discuss how advocacy work was conducted as part of the research process and how trans community leaders were involved throughout the project…
Exploring social inclusion strategies for public health research and practice
This paper presents the participatory visual research design and findings from a qualitative assessment of the social impact of bazuco and inhalant/glue consumption among street youth in Bogotá, Colombia. The paper presents the visual methodologies our participatory action research (PAR) team employed in order to identify and overcome the stigmas and discrimination that street youth experience in society and within state-sponsored drug rehabilita…
Mobilities at Gunpoint
Drawing from geo-ethnographic data collected during a participatory action research (PAR) project funded by the National Science Foundation and subsequent research conducted in Colombia with marginalized youth populations, this article explores the sociospatial exclusion and (im)mobility of the oppressed, subjugated, and persecuted through the social cartographies, geo-narratives, and auto-photographic images of transgender sex workers that were …
Child Poverty in Colombia
A Youth Vision of the City
This dissertation documents the everyday lives and spaces of a population of youth typically constructed as out of place, and the broader urban context in which they are rendered as such. Thirty-three female and transgender street youth participated in the development of this youth-based participatory action research (YPAR) project utilizing geo-ethnographic methods, auto-photography, and archival research throughout a six-phase, eighteen-month r…
