Fisheries in the Northern Black Sea Region
Zooarchaeological materials from three important archaeological sites in the northern Black Sea region were investigated: Olbia Pontica and Borysthenes (Mykolaiv region), and the Belozerskoye settlement (Kherson region). In total, 15,603 animal remains were analysed. Most of the ichthyological material came from excavations in the archaeological site of Olbia. An Egyptian Mummified Crocodile from the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra National Preserve (Ukraine)
This study presents the first examination of an Egyptian mummified crocodile from the collection of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra National Preserve (Ukraine). Archival research established that the specimen was donated to the Archaeological Museum at St. Volodymyr’s University in 1860 by Dr. Joseph Shkuratovsky who likely obtained it in Upper Egypt in the mid-19th century. The mummy had never been studied by Egyptologists, bio-archaeologists, or zoolog…
Vertebrates As Bioindicators of Climate Change
The use of living organisms for stratigraphy or as bioindicators of the state of the environment has been known since the 19th century, but mainly for these studies the remains of invertebrate animals (in particular, molluscs) are used, and from vertebrates – mouse-like rodents. In the course of the work, certain species of vertebrates and invertebrates were selected, based on the presence of which in the material it is possible to reconstruct th…
Preliminary Results of Analysis of Osteological Material from the Polish-Ukrainian Excavations in Olbia (2016–2018)
The authors present an analysis of the bone material obtained during the excavations of the Polish-Ukrainian archaeological mission in Olbia in 2016–2018. Particular attention is paid to the analysis of the chronologically homogeneous deposit of about 6,000 bones, which are mostly raw materials or semi-finished products and rarely the final products for a workshop producing bone tools. This analysis allows for the determination of the meat part o…
Not by Bread Alone
The article presents the results of the investigation of diet features of the Kyiv Podil population in the first half of the 11th century, based on archaeozoological analysis. The study of meat and fish diet in a separate chronological layer includes the animal bones from the well-stratified cultural horizon 14 at the Spaskyi excavation site, dated back to 1020—1040s years.
