  • Fake Science and Simulacra of Culture

    Andrey Beskov, Andrey A Beskov•ARTICLE•Voprosy Filosofii•2022

Modern scientific literature is full of the terms “simulacrum”, “fake”, “post-truth”, “hyperreality”, again and again explaining to us what an illusory world we live in. This world, the artistic quintessence of which was the fantastic dystopia “The Matrix”, is frightening. Fortunately, there is the science that is designed to expose myths and explain to us what the world around us really is. But what if science itself begins to produce massively…

  • Mythology Armed with a Shovel, or Is Archaeology of the Supernatural Possible

    Andrey Beskov•ARTICLE•Stratum plus Archaeology and…•2022

The article analyzes the grounds on which archaeologists draw conclusions about the connection of certain finds with Slavic paganism. It is demonstrated that the conclusions of archaeologists are directly influenced by their ideas about paganism, which are hypothetical in nature and can easily be questioned. As a result, interpretations of archaeological finds turn out to be very subjective. A large number of dubious guesses blur the line between…

  • Anticlerical Discourse in Modern Russian Science

    Andrey Beskov•ARTICLE•Ideas and Ideals•2021

One can often read about the religious revival that came about in Russia after the collapse of Soviet power, both in the media and in scientific literature. According to opinion polls, the majority of Russians are believers, mostly orthodox Christians. The Russian state clearly patronizes religion, at least some specific ("traditional") religions. In socio-political discourse, the prevailing view is that religion is a good thing, and if sometimes…

  • Exploring Neo-Pagan Groups in Social Networks as an Indicator of the Numbers of Adherents

    Open Access•Andrey Beskov•ARTICLE•State Religion and Church in…•2020

The theme of Russian Neo-Paganism or, as it is often called, Rodnoverie, has become prominent in academic periodicals which does not necessarily reflect the real level of Neo-Paganism’s popularity in the Russian society. Researchers are not able to convincingly estimate the number of its adherents. Sociological surveys are too contradictory, and we can try to rely upon the data collected on the Internet. Some authors have already used these data …

  • Russian rock music

    Open Access•Andrey Beskov•ARTICLE•Культура и искусство•2020

This article is dedicated to examination of the art of several famous Russian rock bands, which leaders have repeatedly declared their religiosity and to some extent are engaged in missionary activity of the Russian Orthodox Church. The author covers the questions whether it is appropriate to attribute the art of such rock bands to the genre of “Christian rock”, and do the rock musicians contribute to popularization of Orthodox doctrine and churc…

  • About Research Approaches in the Study of Paganism and Neopaganism (Reflections on N. A. Kutyavin’s Article “To the Problem of the Paradigm of Studying Neo-Paganism”)

    Andrey Beskov, A A Beskov•ARTICLE•Bulletin of Udmurt University…•2020

This article is the author's response to a recent paper by N. A. Kutyavin, in which he set out his views on how to study the Russian neopaganism (“Rodnoverie”). The author agrees with N. A. Kutyavin that Russian neopaganism has no historical continuity with ancient Slavic paganism, but does not agree with many his comments. Although the Kutyavin’s article is devoted to neopaganism, its author focuses primarily on what the ancient Slavic paganism …
