  • Jak to z tym cisem było? Drewno cisowe jako surowiec do produkcji naczyń klepkowych w kontekście wczesnośredniowiecznych znalezisk nekropolicznych pochodzących z ziem polskich

    Open Access•Tomasz Kurasiński•ARTICLE•Acta Universitatis Lodziensis…•2024•References: 52

  • In Roofs, Walls and Towers

    Open Access•Tomasz Kurasiński•ARTICLE•Fasciculi Archaeologiae Historicae•2022

This article deals with prehistoric stone objects called ‘thunderstones,’ which in the Middle Ages through modern times wereoften placed at the border points of houses and farm buildings (e.g., roofs, chimneys, walls, thresholds), as well as in town walls and other defence walls. It should be assumed that they were used as a magical means to protect areas considered to be controlled by humans (orbis interior) from threats posed by the outside wor…

  • The Past Is Written in Stone. About Unusual Weapons in the Middle Ages and Early Modern Times

    Tomasz Kurasiński•ARTICLE•Stratum plus Archaeology and…•2022

The article discusses a group of medieval items whose differences are manifested in the structural use of a chronologically much older component — an axe, most often Neolithic. Their execution with a view to combat use should be considered doubtful. The executioner’s sword (Richtschwert) from Reutlingen (Germany), dated to the first half of the 16th century (Heimatmuseum Reutlingen), is worth to be mentioned. Other finds of military character als…

  • Against Disease, Suffering, and Other Plagues

    Open Access•Tomasz Kurasiński•ARTICLE•Fasciculi Archaeologiae Historicae•2021

Prehistoric stone objects (most often Neolithic) referred to as ‘thunderstones’ in the Middle Ages and modern times have been assigned various meanings – primarily they are supposed to have been used to protect against lightning, fire, and other natural disasters. They have also found application in folk medicine and healing magic (protection against the harmful effects of disease and loss of fertility, and neutralisation of misfortune when it ha…

  • Magia – Religia – Ostentacja. Kaptorgi Z Wczesnośredniowiecznego Cmentarzyska W Radomiu W Ujęciu Komparatystycznym

    Open Access•Tomasz Kurasiński•ARTICLE•Slavia Antiqua Rocznik poświęcony…•2021

This article presents an analysis of two brass lockets, rectangular in shape, discovered in a richly equipped grave no. 62 in an early-medieval grave field in Radom (the 4th quarter of the 11-12th centuries). As a result of the analysis, their cognitive value can be estimated in a comprehensive way against the background of other finds of the type excavated in graves. On the other hand, it has allowed to enrich the knowledge of burying the dead w…

  • Militarne wizerunki przypisywane św. Jerzemu-smokobójcy i ich mitologiczno-religijne konotacje (na przykładzie wczesnośredniowiecznych zawieszek z Europy Środkowo-Wschodniej)

    Open Access•Tomasz Kurasiński•ARTICLE•Acta Universitatis Lodziensis…•2021

Artykuł stanowi próbę interpretacji treści ikonograficznych i znaczeniowych zakodowanych w tarczowatych zawieszkach z konnymi wizerunkami przypisywanymi św. Jerzemu-smokobójcy (Ruś – k. XI – poł. XIII w.; Polska – poł. XII – pierwsza poł. XIII w.; Łotwa – k. XII–XIV w.). Zgodnie z kanonami ikonografii chrześcijańskiej miały one ukazywać zarówno moc Bożą, jak i potęgę świętego. Jednocześnie ich treść sięga głębszych pokładów znaczeniowych, związan…

  • On the Way to the Afterlife. Some Observations on the Presence of Weaponry in Early Medieval Cemeteries in the Context of Their Social and Cultural Circulation

    Open Access•Tomasz Kurasiński•ARTICLE•Fasciculi Archaeologiae Historicae•2020

The custom of burying the dead with weaponry depended on prevailing social norms and religious beliefs which determined the choice of a particular type of weapon to be placed in a pit grave. The primary activity here seems to be the act of withdrawal of selected elements of weaponry from further use for the purpose of including it in the posthumous equipment. This article addresses a few issues of this complex problem while taking account of earl…

  • A grain against a vampire? Some remarks on so-called anti-vampire practices in the light of archaeological and folkloristic-ethnographic data

Open Access•Tomasz Kurasiński, Kalina Skóra et al.•ARTICLE•Sprawozdania Archeologiczne•2018•Cited by: 1

This paper focuses on a ritual of covering the dead with seeds of plants: poppy and field mustard. This habit is recorded in Slavic folkloristic-ethnographic sources and is considered as a so-called anti-demonic practice. In archaeological literature, this habit is not usually mentioned among the criteria of “atypical” burials, perhaps because physical means of restraining the “dangerous” dead are more straightforward to demonstrate than psychic …

  • A sign, a symbol or a letter? Some remarks on omega marks inlaid on early medieval sword blades

Open Access•Andrzej Janowski, Tomasz Kurasiński et al.•ARTICLE•Acta Universitatis Lodziensis…•2012•References: 6

Walory oręża podnosić miało m.in. sygnowanie, przy czym zabieg ten znajdował rozmaite realizacje: od umieszczenia pojedynczego piktogramu do złożonych układów w postaci napisów, ciągów literowo-znakowych lub bardziej złożonych motywów ornamentacyjnych, niekiedy o charakterze narracyjnym. W artykule zwrócono uwagę na możliwości interpretacji umieszczanego na głowniach mieczowych symbolu w kształcie “W”, niekiedy określanego w literaturze przedmiot…
