Cultural & Household Complex of Livestock Farmers in the Medieval Southern Urals
The article is dedicated to the cultural & household complex of livestock farmers in the Medieval Southern Urals (800s–1300s). There is little to no research of nomadic and seminomadic stationary settlements in the Southern Urals steppe. It is associated with virgin land total development in 1950s–1960s. It is less ap- plicable to the late Medieval forest-steppe settlements and hillforts (dated 1200s–1800s) (Chiyalik culture and Yudino culture, M…
Paradoxes in Archaeology (based on materials from the Uelga burial ground)
The article deals with two artifacts discovered in different years in the cultural layer of the Uelga burial complex. The first artifact is a polymetallic plaque (pseudo-pendant), made of bronze covered with gilding, with a pseudo-loop for hanging on top. The bas-relief pattern has a complex pictorial space. Eight semi-X-shaped images are inscribed in a circle, which were fastened on the sides with two interceptions. Another find is a pendant-med…
Cultural Horizons at the Uyelgi Cemetery Mound 11, Southeastern Urals
Cultural Horizons at the Uyelgi Cemetery Mound 11, Southeastern Urals
The article outlines the findings from excavations at Uyelgi mound 11, the most informative one at the cemetery. Its lower horizon revealed a burial demonstrating features highly indicative of the nomadic culture of the Southern Urals. The upper horizon contained two burials belonging to the Srostki culture, characterized by certain artifacts of the "Hungarian" (Carpathian) type, evidencing the return of some South Uralic groups from the west at …
On the Cultural Attribution of One Type of the Srostki Belt Set
In the autumn of 2021, a new medieval site of Aktyuba was discovered in the Southern Urals. As a result of the research, a sacrificial complex was discovered, consisting of a richly decorated horse harness with polymetallic (silver, gold) shields in the Hungarian (Carpathian) style, as well as a belt consisting of a buckle and shields of the Altai (Srostki) style. The subsequent cartography of such materials indicates that they are distributed in…
The Cumans of Southern Urals. A Chain of Cultural Shifts
The paper is devoted to the problem of interpretation of written sources of archaeological materials of the high middle ages. The data discrepancy of numerous written sources on the the Kipchaks (Kimek-Cumans) history confederation had required systematization and comparison in order to identify real information on the early stage of the Cumans (Kipchak) history. New archaeological data regarding location of the Srostky culture sites in the South…
A korai magyar történelem régészeti és archeogenetikai kutatásának legfrissebb eredményei Nyugat-Szibériától a Középső-Volga vidékig
Absztrakt Ebben a tanulmányban a Volga–Urál régió, valamint Nyugat-Szibéria magyar őstörténeti vonatkozású régészeti hagyatékát mutatjuk be. A humán csontanyag archeogenetikai vizsgálatával ezen közösségek, illetve a Kárpát-medence honfoglalás kori népességének kapcsolatrendszerét elemezzük. We present the archaeological findings of the Volga–Ural region and Western-Siberia in relation to Hungarian prehistory. Based on archaeogenetic analyses of …
Cult and Religious Concepts among the Medieval Nomads of the Southern Urals (Based on the Materials of the Uelga Burial Complex)
In the High Middle Ages in the multicultural environment of the nomads of the Ural-Kazakhstan steppes the necessity was maturing for entry into the area of a mono-religious spiritual space. Manichaeism, which appeared in Central Asia as the state religion of the Uyghur Khaganate, subsequently spread widely to the west among the Altai, East Kazakhstan and South Ural nomadic communities. This is indicated by vivid pictorial images (Nestorian — Chri…
