Qualitative exploration of experiences with the adolescent community reinforcement approach with assertive continuing care among youth being released from juvenile incarceration
Effect of Collaborative Care for Persistent Postconcussive Symptoms on Academic Function
BACKGROUND: There is limited long-term data on the course of school-related problems and academic needs for youth with persistent post-concussive symptoms (PPCS). METHODS: This was a randomized trial comparing collaborative care to usual care for 200 youth 11-18 years of age with PPCS. In this report, the main outcomes were academic functioning, GPA, school absences, date of return to school, and school days missed. RESULTS: Youth were mean age o…
Same, opposite and both-sex attracted adolescents’ mental health, safe-sex practices and substance use
This study examined mental health, substance use, and sexual health across sexual attraction groups. 428 adolescents recruited from school-based health centers completed self-report measures. 72% were only opposite-sex attracted, 19% both-sex attracted, 3% same-sex attracted, 4% not sure. Reported partners did not always align with reported attraction. Compared to opposite-sex attracted youth, 1) both-sex attracted youth had significantly higher …
Sexual attraction and experiences in the primary care setting
INTRODUCTION: To test whether sexual minority males and females report lower satisfaction with primary care providers and lower health self-efficacy relative to heterosexual males and females. METHODS: Data from 535 adolescents who participated in one of two randomized clinical trials conducted in a primary care setting were analyzed. Multiple linear regressions controlling for demographic characteristics and treatment condition were used to exam…

Youth and Caregiver Perspectives on Barriers to Gender-Affirming Health Care for Transgender Youth
Measurement invariance testing of a three-factor model of parental warmth, psychological control, and knowledge across European and Asian/Pacific Islander American youth
While the interpretation and effects of parenting on developmental outcomes may be different across European and Asian/Pacific Islander (API) American youth, measurement invariance of parenting constructs has rarely been examined. Utilizing multiple-group confirmatory factor analysis, we examined whether the latent structure of parenting measures are equivalent or different across European and API American youth. Perceived parental warmth, psycho…
Pubertal Timing and Adolescent Substance Initiation
We tested 3 competing hypotheses regarding the relation between pubertal timing and substance initiation in adolescence: the early timing, off-time, and stressful change hypotheses. We used longitudinal data from the Developmental Pathways Project (N = 521). Youth reported whether they had ever tried alcohol, tobacco, or marijuana at baseline, and then again at 6-, 12-, 18-, 24-, 36-, and 72-month follow-up interviews. We estimated interval censo…
Do Peers Contribute to the Achievement Gap between V ietnamese‐ A merican and M exican‐ A merican Adolescents
Documented associations between academic and social functioning have been inconsistent. These discrepancies may reflect the moderating role of sociocultural context. In this study, we examined ethnicity and gender as moderators of this relation. We collected peer nominations, GPA from school records, and self-report questionnaires for 519 Vietnamese-American and Mexican-American middle school students (mean age = 12.7 years). Using general linear…
Mediators of the Associations Between Externalizing Behaviors and Internalizing Symptoms in Late Childhood and Early Adolescence
This study tests the predictive associations between externalizing behaviors and internalizing symptoms and examines the mediating roles of social competence, parent-child conflicts, and academic achievement. Using youth-, parent-, and teacher-reported longitudinal data on a sample of 523 boys and 460 girls from late childhood to early adolescence, we found evidence for pathways between externalizing behaviors and internalizing symptoms in both d…
The Relation Between Maternal and Child Depression in Mexican American Families
In an effort to better understand possible pathways that lead to a relatively high incidence of depressive symptoms among Mexican American youth, an interpersonal stress model of depression was tested using a community sample of 674 Mexican American mothers and their 5th grade children. Structural equation analyses revealed that maternal depression was positively related to mothers’ interpersonal stress in their relationships. Additionally, mater…
Evaluation of the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 Item for Detecting Major Depression Among Adolescents
OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to examine the performance characteristics and validity of the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 Item (PHQ-9) as a screening tool for depression among adolescents. METHODS: The PHQ-9 was completed by 442 youth (aged 13-17 years) who were enrolled in a large health care-delivery system and participated in a study on depression outcomes. Criterion validity and performance characteristics were assessed against a…
Effects of psychotherapy for depression in children and adolescents
Serious sequelae of youth depression, plus recent concerns over medication safety, prompt growing interest in the effects of youth psychotherapy. In previous meta-analyses, effect sizes (ESs) have averaged .99, well above conventional standards for a large effect and well above mean ES for other conditions. The authors applied rigorous analytic methods to the largest study sample to date and found a mean ES of .34, not superior but significantly …
Early Television Exposure and Subsequent Attentional Problems in Children
Objective. Cross-sectional research has suggested that television viewing may be associated with decreased attention spans in children. However, longitudinal data of early television exposure and subsequent attentional problems have been lacking. The objective of this study was to test the hypothesis that early television exposure (at ages 1 and 3) is associated with attentional problems at age 7. Methods. We used the National Longitudinal Survey…
Primary and Secondary Control in East Asia
Oerter, Oerter, Agostiani, Kim and Wibowo (1996) present an intriguing framework for studying concepts of human nature, and they offer thought-provoking applications of that framework to culture and to the primary-secondary control model. Their evidence that primary control is more characteristic of American subjects than those in Japan, Korea and Indonesia harmonizes well with our view (see Weisz, Rothbaum, & Blackburn, 1984a, 1984b). The work r…
