  • “Io credo…”: “Professing” faith in Paradiso 24

    Open Access•Zygmunt G Baranski•ARTICLE•Forum Italicum A Journal of…•2021

Dantists have largely interpreted Paradiso 24 as a dryly intellectual canto that positively engages with medieval scholastic culture. Consequently the poet’s treatment of faith is seen as both ideologically unproblematic and as an essentially private declaration. The present article argues that such claims are questionable. In actual fact, Paradiso 24 is highly critical of the academic world, while its treatment of faith, although orthodox, is pe…

  • On Dante’s Trail

    Zygmunt G Baranski•ARTICLE•Italian Studies•2017

The article has two main aims. First, it assesses recent developments in Dante scholarship and calls into question the validity of some of the critical, historical, and methodological premises that these trends have fostered. Second, it proposes ways in which the study of the poet ought to be historically and methodologically more sensitive to the nuances and specificities of medieval culture than is generally the norm in Dante studies. To illust…

  • With such vigilance! With such effort!” Studying Dante ‘Subjectively’

    Zygmunt G Baranski•ARTICLE•Italian Culture•2015•References: 1

Since the nineteenth century, Dante studies have been dominated by variations on a contextualizing philological and historicist critical method. The article examines the implications, and especially several of the shortcomings and blind spots, of this approach. It focuses on two closely inter-related areas of investigation that hold positions of prominence in modern-day dantismo: the study of Dante's literary and doctrinal sources and of his inte…

  • Dante, America, and the Limits of ‘Allegory’

    Zygmunt G Baranski•ARTICLE•Italian Studies•1995

For nearly forty years now, a single image of North American Dante scholarship has held almost exclusive sway among non-American Dantists. It is an image which is largely constructed out of two components:the concept of allegory and the name of Charles S. Singleton. Their coming together — it is claimed — has generated a tradition of over-subtle, theologically-based interpretations of the Commedia which have shown little sensitivity to the poetic…

  • Structural Retrospection in Dante's Comedy: The Case of Purgatorio Xxvii

    Zygmunt G Baranski•ARTICLE•Italian Studies•1986

Lecturae of PURGATORIO XXVII have been almost unanimous in pointing out the importance of this canto. They have underlined its thematic complexity and variety, its stylistic diversity, its symbolic polymorphism, and its key position in the organization of the poem as the bridge between Purgatory and the Earthly Paradise. Conversely, and almost certainly as a result of the canto's heterogeneity, scholars have found it more difficult to reach the s…
