Territorial Mobility and the Mamprusi Kingship
In December of 1965 I had recently returned from two years of fieldwork in northern Ghana. My supervisor, Prof. Meyer Fortes, invited me to accompany him and his wife Doris to a conference in the village of Sonchamp, outside Paris. There we were welcomed with wonderful hospitality by Germaine Dieterlen at her home. The three-day Sonchamp meeting was my first introduction to French anthropologists and it was a truly momentous occasion. As I rememb…

The Quest for the Other
The Court and the Kola Nut
For the Mamprusi people of northern Ghana, the gift of kola nuts indicates respect and gratitude. Those who chew kola together should love and trust one another. The gift of kola is also used to initiate an on-going relationship in which the recipient may be expected to cede to a future request from the donor. Kola is thus associated with courtship. Mamprusi make explicit some of the ambiguities surrounding the English word 'court'. Mamprusi chie…

The Savage Within
Mamprusi witchcraft, subversion and changing gender relations
In the pre-colonial Mamprusi kingdom female witches were either executed after sentencing in the king's court, or segregated in a special section of a major market town where they received medicine to neutralise their witchcraft. This treatment of witches is a manifestation of the centralising process at work in the kingdom, and also exemplifies the division of ritual labour characteristic of the polity. Recent changes in the constitution of the …
The Python Killer
Nzema of West Africa, who inhabit a land of forest and lagoons along the Atlantic, continue a heritage untapped by anthropologists and scarcely influenced by Western civilization. Vinigi L. Grottanelli first discovered the rich culture of this southern Ghanaian tribe in 1954. Over the next three decades, intermittent sojourns enabled Grottanelli to develop friendships with the Nzema and learn about their beliefs, traditions, and practices. In twe…

Organisation sociale des Lobi
This article examines the social organization of the Lobi, a society inhabiting Burkina Faso and Côte d'Ivoire, arguing for its characterization as a bilinear system. Drucker-Brown and de Rouville challenge previous interpretations that emphasize a segmentary lineage structure, highlighting the importance of both matrilineal and patrilineal ties in Lobi social life. They explore the roles of kinship, marriage, residence, and land tenure in shapin…

Mamprusi Installation Ritual and Centralisation
Rituals performed for the installation of a Mamprusi chief suggest a model of political centralisation analogous to the physical process of convention. Office (naam), like heat diffused by convection, originates from a single source and circulates through that source to the diverse courts which constitute the polity

Calendar and Ritual

Joking at Death
