Pigs and People
Highly concentrated intensive confinement systems have become the norm in agriculture concerning nonhuman animals. These systems have provoked a lively debate from an animal welfare perspective. Sociologists can contribute to this debate by drawing parallels between the institutional regulation of human beings and of animals under confinement. Results of research on the transformation of Canadian hog production from the 1950s to the present—based…
Intensive Hog Farming in Manitoba
Intensive Livestock Operations, Disembedding, and Community Polarization in Manitoba
Disembedding mechanisms separate activities from their local contexts and reorganize them in the global economy. Manitoba's rapidly growing intensive hog industry has become disembedded socioeconomically, environmentally, and politically. Socioeconomically, intensive livestock operations (ILOs) have come under corporate control and are no longer bound by collective agricultural supply management policies. Environmentally, odor and water quality c…
IT, Gender, and Professional Practice
Recent research has focused on how gender and computer technology contribute to the structuring of professional roles. A case study was carried out at a long-term care facility in Winnipeg, Canada, in which a nursing unit-based automated system had been installed to control the distribution of medication to patients. A questionnaire was distributed to all nursing staff, and detailed interviews were carried out with pharmacists and nursing adminis…

Environmental impact assessment and sustainable development
The political dynamics of environmental impact assessment (EIA) are explored through an analysis of the controversy surrounding two pulp and paper megaprojects slated for the western Canadian boreal forest. One is the Japanese‐owned Alberta‐Pacific mill sited on the Athabasca River in Alberta. The other is the proposed expansion of the Repap mill located in The Pas in Manitoba. This study takes the position that although EIA has moved from the ma…

The labour process and workplace injuries in the Canadian meat packing industry
Sustainable or Unsustainable Development? An Analysis of an Environmental Controversy

Peripheralizing Core Labour Markets
Recent debates in the sociology of work and employment have drawn a pessimistic picture of the leading mass production industries in the advanced nations and the core labour markets they sustain. It has been claimed that such industries are in decline and that their workers face an assault on their jobs, wage levels and working conditions. The Canadian meat packing industry has been selected as a case study of a mass production industry and a cor…

Alternative Technology
A vigorous tradition in American historical writing has outlined the largely optimistic reaction to the onset of American industrialization in the first half of the nineteenth century when the social fabric was irreparably transformed by the advent of the railroad, the steamship and the textile mill. Writers as diverse as Perry Miller, Leo Marx, Hugo Meier, Thomas Parke Hughes and Lewis Mumford have argued that in America, unlike Europe, the domi…
