Is Sport Really Religion? Critical Assessments
Some scholars argue, over the past four decades, broadly that sport constitutes religious activity or, more specifically, that specific sports qualify as religious activity. In this paper, I provide two critical discussions which question the “sport as religion” position. These counterarguments are not based in theological-insider considerations supposing that religion is qualitatively distinct or sui generis as a means of defending religion’s un…
Skateboarding and subjective-life embodied spirituality
This study argues that skateboarding is a contemporary form of 'subjective-life embodied spirituality', a fusing of two theoretical frameworks. This theoretical framework is discussed along with specific aspects of skateboarding fitting into this framework. These spiritual aspects include subjective risk-taking, emotional processing, and connecting with an urban environment. This article discusses and describes these aspects and considers what sk…

Deconversion, Sport, and Rehabilitative Hope
This article, based on qualitative interviews and ethnographic research, explores three types of on-the-ground rehabilitative hope supplied by sport for many post-evangelicals within the upper Bible Belt region traversing through the process of deconversion. First, sport is an often-cited space that is identified as broadening social networks, leading to initial questioning of inherited religiosity. Second, sport offers a level of amelioration of…
Escaping Our Shitty Reality: Counterpublics, Orange Is the New Black , and Religion
Recognizing popular culture as an increasingly valuable discursive site, this article argues that Orange Is the New Black, the popular Netflix series, intentionally attempts to operate as a counterpublic discursive engagement to challenge tacitly held opinions about female prisoners and the carceral system of the United States. To unfold this counterpublic discourse, this article explores the utility of religion within the third season of Orange …
Religion, counterprivates, and disabilites
This article contributes to the emerging intersectional analyses of religious studies and disability studies by conceptualizing counterprivates specific to religious spaces. To accomplish this task, we investigate the ways in which persons with disabilities, both physical and cognitive, engender counterprivate spaces within Evangelical and Mormon churches. Specifically, we posit that those with disabilities constitute a counterprivate within (a) …
The limits of interfaith? Interfaith identities, emerging potentialities, and exclusivity
Interfaith movements within the United States are currently attempting to integrate nonreligionists – agnostics, unaffiliated, humanists, and atheists for example – into their dialogical spaces. We argue that this attempt to further inclusivity within interfaith movements, although well-intended, is impeded by what we refer to as the interfaith identity paradigm. This paradigm focuses on concretised religious identities through a confessional mod…
