Consumption of Low-Nutrient, Energy-Dense Foods and Beverages at School, Home, and Other Locations among School Lunch Participants and Nonparticipants
Direct certification in the national school lunch program expands access for children
Under the policy of direct certification for free school meals, school districts use information shared by state agencies about household eligibility for means‐tested programs in the state in order to determine the potential eligibility for free meals of students enrolled in the district. This information allows districts to automatically approve students in these eligible households for free meals without requiring the household to complete the …
Intergenerational Neighborhood-Type Mobility: Examining Differences between Blacks and Whites
Using sibling data from the Panel Study of Income Dynamics linked with US Census data, this paper examines the intergenerational nature of neighborhood quality. It is hypothesized that the quality of where one resides as an adult is a function of one's childhood neighborhood through the conditioning and constraining of adult residential choice. Further, it is posited that this relationship varies by race and is stronger for those living in the mo…

Boundlessness, Consolidation, and Discontinuity between Generations: Catholic Seminary Studies in Antebellum America
Many years ago John Higham identified a transition in American culture "from boundlessness to consolidation," the beginnings of which could be traced to the 1850s. Among indications of a scaling back in the prevailing sense of unlimited openness were an incipient shift from romanticism to realism in the arts, and a movement toward tighter organization and centralization, often associated with the Civil War, which was already discernible in the pr…

Young unwed fathers of afdc children: Do they provide support
We examine the support provided by fathers of children born to disadvantaged teenage mothers. Our sample includes the fathers of 6,009 children born over a two-year period to 3,855 teenage mothers receiving AFDC in three economically depressed inner cities. These fathers provide little social and economic support to their children. Support declines as their children age from infants to toddlers and as fathers’ relationships with the mothers grow …

How did colleges and universities deal with the modernization of education and the rise of research universities? In this book, Philip Gleason offers the first comprehensive study of higher education in the twentieth century, tracing the evolution of responses to an increasingly secular educational system. At the beginning of the century, Catholics accepted modernization in the organizational sphere while resisting it ideologically. Convinced of …

History Under the Sign of Assimilation
In 1958 sociologist Joseph Fichter reported that students in the upper grades of a midwestern public school listed as the greatest men living today President Eisenhower, Vice President Nixon, and Elvis Presley (in that order). Catholic school students of the same age and in the same area listed Pope Pius XII, President Eisenhower, and Cardinal Mindzenty of Hungary.' The Melting Pot: Symbol of Fusion or Confusion
World War II and the Development of American Studies
DESPITE THE FACT THAT WORLD WAR II IMMEDIATELY PRECEDED THE great burgeoning of academic programs in American Studies, our conventional understanding of the rise of the movement ignores the war and, by doing so, denies it any role in the development of American Studies. Very little research has been devoted to the subject, but what might be called the folk of American Studies runs like this: The movement had its beginnings in the 1920s with scatt…

Minorities (Almost) All: The Minority Concept in American Social Thought
ACCORDING TO THE ON-LINE CATALOG SYSTEM IN MY UNIVERSITY library, the Library of Congress currently employs well over three hundred subject headings under the general rubric Minorities. This fact, daunting to the researcher, strikingly confirms the salience of the minority concept in contemporary American life. Indeed, we are so accustomed to hearing the word used in the sociological sense with which the LC headings are primarily concerned that w…
Pluralism, Democracy, and Catholicism in the Era of World War II
After World War II bitter controversy broke out in the United States between Catholics, on the one hand, and Protestants and liberals on the other. Although important issues were involved, these controversies have attracted almost no scholarly attention. Donald Crosby's book on Catholics and McCar-thyism is the only full-scale monograph dealing with any aspect of the controversies of which I am aware. My intention here is to draw attention to two…
The Main Sheet Anchor: John Carroll and Catholic Higher Education
John Carroll was disturbed about the future of Catholicism as he surveyed the scene in the aftermath of the American Revolution. As a supporter of the patriot movement he was pleased that the policy of religious toleration allowed Catholics to participate fully in the political life of the new nation. No doubt he also perceived that the wartime alliance with Catholic France had done much to improve the status of the church among his countrymen. B…
Immigration and American Catholic Intellectual Life
Relatively little has been added in the past two or three years to the discussion of Catholic intellectual life in the United States which reached a climax following the publication of Msgr. John Tracy Ellis's essay on the subject in 1955. Catholicism and Cultural Change in the 1960's
Areal cultural shift doesn't happen very often. Skepticism about whether one took place in the 1960's is quite natural, especially in view of the rapidity with which cultural fashions have come and gone in the past 15 years. The New Conservatism had hardly crested before it was succeeded by the End of Ideology, which was displaced with equal speed by the New Left. In the religious sphere, the revival of the early 50's gave way to the Death of God…
