  • Law enforcement activities in Italy

Marzio Barbagli, L Sartori•ARTICLE•Journal of Modern Italian Studies•2004•Cited by: 1

Despite the fact that no one nourishes doubts about their importance, we know little or nothing about the forces of order in Italy, about how they are organized, about their daily activities, about the difficulties they encounter in their work. The greater part of the available studies of the police go back to the 1960s and 1970s, and many of these had denunciation rather than understanding as their end. Unlike what has happened in the United Sta…

  • Lost primacy

Marzio Barbagli•ARTICLE•Journal of Modern Italian Studies•2004•Cited by: 2

This article attempts to answer four questions. First: has Italy today, or has it had in the last thirty years, rates of theft, robbery and homicide that are higher than those in other western European countries? Second: have crime statistics in Italy followed the same pattern as in other European countries in the same period? Third: have crime statistics become more or less comparable in the western European countries in this period? Fourth: wha…

  • Society and Politics in the Age of the Risorgimento

Society and Politics in the Age of the Risorgimento contains ten essays written in honour of Denis Mack Smith by leading British and Italian specialists. The volume is intended both as a tribute to Denis Mack Smith's outstanding contribution to Italian history and as an attempt to open up wider debate on Italian society and politics in the period of the Risorgimento, bringing aspects of nineteenth-century Italian politics and social history into …

This historical context necessary for understanding Italian family life from the early nineteenth century to the mid-twentieth century is outlined in this introduction. Italy's backward economy and its political fragmentation in the first half of the nineteenth century is detailed, the major economic differences among various parts of the country are discussed, and the geography of Italian family forms is described. Changes in family form and dem…

    Open Access•Marzio Barbagli, Piergiorgio Corbetta•ARTICLE•European Journal of Political…•1982•Cited by: 3•References: 5

Since the beginning of the 1970s many scholars have predicted that the Italy of ‘centrifugal democracy’ would in the course of a few years become a ‘consociational democracy’. The return of the PCI to opposition in early 1979 and the ‘political turning’ decided by the party leadership in 1980 have disproved this prediction. This article maintains that a most important source of error in this prediction is to be found in the simplistic schema adva…
