(De)Construction, Postmodernism, and Social Problems
This chapter focuses on deconstructionist themes in constructionism and poststructuralism. The wide-flowing theoretical stream named deconstruction has two main arteries: literary deconstruction; and social deconstruction. Each has produced its own form of deconstructionism both beyond and within sociology. The implications of both literary deconstruction and social deconstruction have found their way into the study of social problems, producing …

A Call for Further Research on the Impact of State-Level Immigration Policies on Public Health
Arizona’s Support Our Law Enforcement and Safe Neighborhoods Act, signed into law in April 2010, is already adversely affecting public health in the state. Our findings from a study on childhood obesity in Flagstaff suggest that the law changed health-seeking behaviors of residents of a predominantly Latino neighborhood by increasing fear, limiting residents’ mobility, and diminishing trust of officials. These changes could exacerbate barriers to…
War, Aggression and State Crime
In this article, we argue that the 2003 US/UK invasion and occupation of Iraq was a form of state crime and offer a criminological analysis of the event. First, we describe how the war on Iraq violated the UN Charter and international humanitarian law. Then, we provide a narrative analysis of the historical and contemporary origins of this crime through the lens of an integrated model for the study of organizational deviance that has proved usefu…
The Origins and Development of the Concept and Theory of State-Corporate Crime
The important contributions made by Richard Quinney to the study of corporate crime and the sociology of law, crime, and justice have influenced the development of the concept of state-corporate crime. This concept has been advanced to examine how corporations and governments intersect to produce social harm. State-corporate crime is defined as criminal acts that occur when one or more institutions of political governance pursue a goal in direct …
Unemployment, Imprisonment, and Social Structures of Accumulation
This study explores the relationship between punishment and social structure by combining the work of Rusche and Kirchheimer with current theorizing regarding social structures of accumulation (SSAs). Specifically, we theorize that the unemployment‐imprisonment (U‐I) relationship is historically contingent. In particular, we argue that qualitative changes in the configuration of labor markets, state strategies for managing surplus populations, an…

Between Citizens and the Socialist State
In 1973 the Cuban government abolished the private practice of law, replacing it with a system of law collectives known as bufetes colectivos. These law collectives were designed to provide low-cost legal services to the public in ways consistent with the ideology of a nonadversarial relationship between lawyers and the state. I examine both the relationship between the ideological and legal bases for the socialist practice of law in Cuba and the…

Crime and a Theory of the State
The Social Meanings of Violent Death
While death is an absolute, the social responses to it demonstrate considerable variation. This variation exists because it is not only the death itself, but the manner of dying which determines the social meaning of any death. This paper investigates the differential responses to various forms of violent death, and attempts to identify those factors which influence the social meanings of violent death. Focusing upon the dimensions of inevitabili…
