  • Cold War Ruins

    Wendy Kozol•ARTICLE•Journal of American History•2018•Citada por: 1

Ruins, Lisa Yoneyama eloquently argues in Cold War Ruins, are the spatial and temporal “repositories of debris that in the present offer wisdom associated with failed strategies, unrealized possibilities, and paths that could have but were never taken” (p. 210). Tracking ruins across the longue durée of the twentieth century, this impressive study explores the historical forces that have delimited the possibilities for justice for survivors of co…

  • Ornamenting the Unthinkable

    Rebecca A Adelman, Wendy Kozol•ARTICLE•Women's studies quarterly•2016•Citada por: 1

Repetitive, messy, and often hard to see: survival is rarely photogenic. Relative to spectacular scenes of violent dying or heroic living that comprise familiar images of military conflict, survival may look rather dull, if it appears at all. Militarized violence typically becomes visible in mortality, but survival blurs the distinctions between life and death in the precarious environments that war creates, thus eluding or confounding predominan…

  • Battlefield Souvenirs and the Affective Politics of Recoil

    Wendy Kozol•ARTICLE•Photography and Culture•2012•Citada por: 3•Referências: 11

This essay explores the ways in which archives that bear the traces of military violence set up affective demands for those who turn to photographic archives in pursuit of evidence. I compare my intimate encounter with a relative's archive of Second World War battlefield souvenirs with the US national encounter with the torture pictures from Abu Ghraib. Bringing these two seemingly disparate archives into conjunction reveals battlefield archives …
