  • Representing the Viewer

    Patricia S Mann•ARTICLE•Social Text•1990•Cited by: 1

Until August 3, the United States had been a bystander in relation to the dramatic series of international events which had been shaking up the world order, for months on end. President Bush was receiving kudos as a pragmatic facilitator of other nations' transformative acts, but for the first time since WWII, the continuing geo-political centrality of the United States seemed open to doubt. With his invasion of Kuwait, Saddam Hussein provided Pr…

  • Unifying Discourse

    Patricia S Mann, Patricia Mann•ARTICLE•Social Text•1990•Cited by: 5

In this essay, I shall be concerned with the public sphere as a site for political activity. The strength of Habermas's vision of the public sphere lies, I think, in his emphasis upon the political role of the public sphere. Critiques of Habermas tend to lose this focus upon the political significance and meaning of public sphere activities. There is a great deal to criticize in Habermas's vision, of course, insofar as he seems nostalgically comm…

  • Does Socialism Signify

    Patricia S Mann, Patricia Mann•ARTICLE•Social Text•1989

We face a dramatic array of new social problems, vexing new problems of the natural and social environment which seem to require political forms of response. Yet the institutional as well as rhetorical fabric of political life needs to be substantially rewoven before we can begin to drape these new problems of everyday life in a mantle of political solicitude. We presently experience an increasingly toxic natural environment, decaying wage and em…

  • Socialism under the Influence

    Patricia S Mann•ARTICLE•Social Text•1988

The project of socialism is presently stalled. Efforts to conceive of, much less promote, a meaningful life for individuals within a harmonious modern community are beset with seemingly intractable difficulties. Capitalist and socialist countries reach gingerly and half-heartedly for solutions ideologically identified with their opposites: the East for more individual freedom, the West for more human forms of social distribution. But these seem a…

  • Recognizing Men

    Patricia S Mann•ARTICLE•Social Text•1986

elude our conceptual grasp, for the most part. The pornography debate gains significance from the fact that it has been a political vehicle for women-on both sides of the issue-to begin to assert and articulate fundamental changes in male and female forms of sexual agency. In this article, I will analyze the underpinnings of the pornography debate, and then attempt to move beyond it to identify terms more adequate to the renegotiation of the sexu…
