Reincarnation Belief and the Christian Churches
Reincarnation has never been part of mainstream Christian theology. This is true in spite of periodic speculations by Christian theologians, and in spite of the fact that reincarnation believers sometimes wrongly impute belief in reincarnation to prominent Christian thinkers. Even so, in 1984 Paul Badham was able to point to statistics which indicated that as many Anglicans believed in reincarnation as believed in heaven and hell. This paper is b…
Lives-Long Learning: The Effects of Reincarnation Belief on Everyday Life in England
A sizeable minority of Westerners who have no particular connection with Eastern or New Age religions nevertheless claim to believe in reincarnation. Does this belief affect their practical morality and how they think about suffering and injustice? An interview study conducted in England mapped the range of meanings such people give to reincarnation, and found: 1) Karma was widely referred to, but in the context of Western notions of self-improve…
Reincarnation belief in Britain: New age orientation or mainstream option
This paper offers some observations on the prevalence and nature of belief in reincarnation within the UK. Based on a small‐scale interview study, it examines some of the influences on reincarnation belief, in particular the significance of transient, personal experiences. It also considers whether people who believe in reincarnation, but do not belong to groups which teach it, can be understood entirely within the loose category of New Age relig…

Response To James Cox
I wish to make two responses to Cox's clear and useful paper, both of which arise from his conclusions. First, the term 'methodology' has two rather distinct meanings within Religious Studies. The first meaning of methodology is the theoretical framework within which we work—the assumptions that we make either consciously or un consciously and which affect the ways in which data about religions and the religious are interpreted. This framework ma…
From Ithaca to the Odyssey
All references to Ithaca in ancient authors are in Homeric contexts. The BSA's excavations in the island, here summarized, have shown the importance throughout classical times of the shrines at Aëtos and Polis, indicated by the objects dedicated from many parts of the Greek world. Among these, the twelve tripod-lebetes found in the Polis Cave cannot be dissociated from the Phaeacian tripods given to Odysseus. It is suggested that the dedications …

Excavations in Ithaca: Tris Langadas
The site was discovered by Andreas Lekatsas, then proprietor of the Stavros Hotel, in his vineyard, and excavated for the British School, at his generous invitation, in two campaigns in 1937 and 1938. It lies on a steeply sloping hillside just above the path leading up from the cave side of Polis Bay, and commands a splendid view down the Ithaca channel towards Same in Kephallenia (plate 1 a ). Its main area (christened TL), presumably a sizeable…
A. J. B. Wace: Supplementary Bibliography
The appearance this year of the late Professor Wace's book on the Marlborough Tapestries at Blenheim Palace completes the tale of his published work. This seems an opportune moment to bring up to date the Bibliography published in the Festschrift Volume, xlvi of this Annual . The new entries will observe as far as possible the categories there adopted.
Prehistoric Laconia: Part II
This paper covers the remaining districts of Laconia which have not been described in the last Annual , as well as the islands of Kythera and Antikythera. We include a Chronological Table, Distribution Maps, and a short summary. Abbreviations used are the same as for Part I. Gythion and Cranae: So far no prehistoric remains have been discovered on the acropolis at Gythion, although the south and east terraces are covered with classical and Roman …
Prehistoric Laconia: Part I
This survey (Part II of which will be published shortly in the Annual ) includes all Laconia, as far as the ancient borders with Messenia and Arcadia, the Thyreatis, and the islands of Kythera and Antikythera. Most of the results have been established by surface research alone, in 1936–8 and 1956–8. Little was previously known about the distribution of prehistoric sites in Laconia, and few settlements have been excavated. Much of Laconia is eithe…
Prehistoric Laconia: A Note
This paper contains a brief summary of the results of researches into the prehistory of Laconia which were conducted mainly during the years 1936–9. It is greatly regretted that a series of varied but compelling impediments has hitherto delayed a proper publication; this, however, will follow as soon as possible. The map, Fig. 1, is taken from sheet G 13, Kalamai, of the 1/250,000 series dated June 1944. The chronological table lists the sites al…
Excavations at Stavros, Ithaca, in 1937
For three weeks of May–June 1937 excavations of limited extent were conducted at Stavros in northern Ithaca. The main site was a small area immediately below the village square to the south-west, where chance finds by the proprietor of the land, followed in 1936 by a trial excavation, had revealed the presence of Greek graves and a Bronze Age deposit. Stavros lies on a narrow ridge commanding the bays of Phrikes to the east and Polis to the west.…
