Women and LGBTQI people in the Catholic Church: Hints of liberation
Liberation theology is well-known and well-established in the twenty-first century. It was born in the 1960s in a Latin American context as a protest of Catholic faith against the widespread social and economic oppression and suffering of that region’s poor. It is not to be so restrictively understood in this essay; here it is extended to be understood of the ‘human poverty,’ the deprivation of human dignity, of women and LGBTQI individuals. In t…
Response to Thomas Finegan’s “An Unnoticed Body-Person Dualism: A Rejoinder to Lawler and Salzman”
This article is a brief response to Dr. Finegan’s recent rejoinder to an earlier exchange we had with him in Irish Theological Quarterly on the morality of same-sex civil unions
Catholic teaching on same-sex parenting: A critical analysis
The Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (CDF) teaches that same-sex parents are detrimental to the normal development of the children they parent. The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) supports this teaching and provides sociological evidence to substantiate it. In this essay, we critically analyze that teaching and the USCCB’s evidence. Part one explains the ethical inconsistencies in the CDF’s teaching on same-sex pare…
Marrying Body and Theology: A Response to Thomas Finegan
In a recent article in this journal, Thomas Finegan replies to our earlier article in this journal, which proposes a theological and ethical argument for the Catholic church to recognize same-sex civil unions as a lower-case sacrament. His critique focuses on the theological significance of embodiment as a one flesh union taught by Jesus, defended throughout Catholic tradition, and justified philosophically. We respond that Finegan’s critique mis…
Pope Francis, Civil Unions, and Same-Sex Marriage: Theological Reflections
This essay examines civil union and same-sex marriage in relation to the Catholic doctrine of heterosexual marriage. It concludes of civil union that it is a civil reality, the concern of civil, not ecclesiastical, authority. It finds in Catholic marriage three bonds between believing spouses, of love, of law, and of Sacrament (upper case), and argues that in same-sex marriage there are three bonds, of love, of law, and of sacrament (lower case).…
Human Dignity and Homosexuality in Catholic Teaching: An Anthropological Disconnect between Truth and Love
Catholic teaching proposes a definition of sexual human dignity that finds truth and love in the meaning of sexual acts between spouses in heterosexual marriage. For those acts to be moral between fertile couples, they must be potentially-reproductive acts, but that requirement does not hold for infertile couples. The Church proposes sexual norms and legislation based on that definition. We propose a definition of human sexuality that finds love …
The Bicameral Brain and Theological Ethics: An Initial Exploration
Pope John Paul II called for an intense dialogue between science and theology, “a common interactive relationship,” in which each discipline is “open to the discoveries and insights of the other” while retaining its own integrity. This essay seeks to be responsive to that call and is an initial exploration of relationships between contemporary neuroscience and Catholic theological ethics. It examines neuroscientific data on the bicameral brain an…
Catholic Theological Ethics: Ancient Questions, Contemporary Responses
People Beginning Sexual Experience
This chapter discusses sex and the beginning of sexual activity. It develops a theory of virtue and virtue ethics which focuses more on the character of the sexual agent than on the acts the agent does. A virtuous character learned in a community of origin, it is argued, will impel a person to acts of sexual virtue and avoidance of acts of sexual vice. Three virtues are advanced as primary for virtuous sexual activity: love, justice, and chastity…

Problematic Issues in the Early Years of Marriage: Content for Premarital Education
This article presents findings about problematic issues from a national study of couples married five years or less. It argues that the top 10 issues identified as problematic suggest key content areas for premarital education and makes suggestions for both program development and existing program evaluation. The top three issues reported by this sample are balancing job and family, frequency of sexual relations, and financial issues. For each of…
Marital Satisfaction and Religious Heterogamy: A Comparison of Interchurch and Same-Church Individuals
Using a national sample of Christians, this study compared interchurch and same-church respondents on several relationship variables and explored possible predictors of marital satisfaction. Interchurch and same-church respondents were not different on marital satisfaction or other nonreligious relationship variables but were different on several religious relationship variables. The relationship between marital satisfaction and religious heterog…
Religious Heterogamy and Religiosity: A Comparison of Interchurch and Same-Church Individuals
Based on a national sample of Christian couples, interchurch respondents reported lower levels of religiosity than same-church respondents on a number of religious variables. Respondents in same-church marriages were similar in religiosity regardless of whether the relationship was initially interchurch or same-church. The study did not find evidence that interchurch respondents were more likely than same-church individuals to drift away from chu…
