The Scholarly Pathfinder: Andō Hideharu’s “Weba kikō” (Max Weber: A Travelogue, 1972)
In 1969/70, Andō Hideharu (1921–1998), a Japanese historian of ideas, was a visiting professor at the Max Weber-Institute in Munich, Germany, for a period of one year. He was a harsh critic of Marianne Weber’s 1926 biography of her husband. During his tenure, he travelled to a number of places associated with Max Weber, with the aim of reconstructing his personal history. Andō literally followed Weber’s path from the cradle to the grave, though n…

In 1969 Else Jaffe, a former student and later a close friend and lover of Max Weber, was interviewed by Japanese sociologist Hideharu Ando, who was interested to know what Weber thought about some
The Genesis of the Max Weber-Gesamtausgabe and the Contribution of Wolfgang J. Mommsen
The start of the MWG lies in the early 1970s. The idea of founding the MWG should be seen in the context of the socio-critical debates and those on academic policies, which took place in West Germany when the 68-movement was on the ebb. The MWG was opposed to western Marxism and was not a 'counter-edition' to the Marx-Engels-Gesamtausgabe – as is often suggested. The instituting of MWG was furthered politically by the liberal-conservative camp. T…

Power of Memory in Modern Japan
The Power of Memory in Modern Japan
Due to their symbolic and iconographic meanings, expressions of ‘collective memory’ constitute the mental topography of a society and make a powerful contribution to its cultural, political and social identity. In Japan, the subject of ‘memory’ has prompted a huge response in recent years. Indeed, it has been and continues to be debated at many levels of Japan’s political, social, economic and cultural life. For the historian and social scientist…
The Spirit of Modernity: Max Weber’s Protestant Ethic and Japanese Social Sciences
In this article, I reconstruct the reception of Max Weber's essays on The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism in 20th-century Japanese social sciences. I will show that even during Weber's lifetime, Japanese economists responded to the so-called 'Weber thesis' and were aware of the ongoing debate on the origins of capitalism in European social sciences. Since the first Japanese translation of Weber's essays appeared in 1938, interpretat…

Western Impact and Asian Values in Japan’s Modernization: A Weberian Critique
Ever since the opening of the country by an American squadron in 1853–4 and the subsequent modernization process during the Meiji era, historians and social scientists have been searching for a grand theory that helps to explain why — among Asian countries — it was Japan first (and for a long time Japan alone) that was able to follow in the footsteps of Western capitalism. Observers from abroad have been tempted to call this process a success sto…
