  • A preliminary arrangement of Pomeranian coinage from the 11th and early 12th centuries

    Open Access•Mateusz Bogucki•ARTICLE•Slavia Antiqua Rocznik poświęcony…•2025

Researchers knew about the existence of the 11th-century Pomeranian coinage back in the 19th century. The basic source is a large hoard from the village of Łupawa (Lupow) near Słupsk, consisting mostly of imitations. The term “Łupawa imitations” has been in use in numismatics, to which – over the last 100 years – various authors have included all kinds of “barbaric” coins. It contained silver coins and ornaments, probably wrapped in cloth and hidden in a pot. This is secondary information from intermediaries who obtained information about the hoard (which consisted of several hundred coins) from various sources. At least 152 specimens were recorded. The pot also contained 17 fragments of linen…

Open Access•ławomir Wadyl, Weronika Bałdyga et al.•ARTICLE•Antiquity•2025•References: 1

New research at Ciepłe, a unique early-medieval centre in northern Poland, reveals a Piast-era complex with three strongholds, elite chamber graves and far-reaching connections. Founded in the late tenth century AD, Ciepłe challenges traditional models of Pomeranian integration, offering fresh perspectives on early medieval state formation, frontier strategy and cross-cultural interactions

  • O fragmentaryzacji srebra wczesnośredniowiecznego

    Open Access•Mateusz Bogucki•ARTICLE•Slavia Antiqua Rocznik poświęcony…•2020

For years, a discussion has been held about the circulation of silver in the early Middle Ages and the role played by fragments of coins and ornaments. This multi-faceted discussion has also revolved around the function of the smallest fragments. Metrological research has indicated certain regularities in the incidence of fragments of a specified weight depending on region and chronology. New data for this discussion was provided by a treasure tr…
