  • How Census Undercount Became a Civil Rights Issue and Why It Is Increasingly Important

Open Access•Lisa Neidert, Reynolds Farley et al.•ARTICLE•RSF The Russell Sage Foundation…•2025•References: 1

This article traces the history of census undercount and its importance to civil rights. The Constitution mandates a census and calls for Congress to use the results to apportion seats in Congress and the Electoral College. A substantial undercount in the census will misallocate congressional and electoral college votes. More recently, census-derived statistics are used for the geographic allocation of federal and state funds. This linkage of the…

  • US Presidential Elections and the Spatial Pattern of the American Second Demographic Transition

    Open Access•Ron Lesthaeghe, Lisa Neidert•ARTICLE•Population and Development Review•2009•Cited by: 12•References: 3

This research note is a sequel to an earlier article in this journal (Lesthaeghe and Neidert 2006) in which we documented a strong and robust spatial correlation between the 2000 and 2004 presidential election results on the one hand and the extent to which states and counties had evolved on the "second demographic transition" (SDT) dimension. At that time the critique was voiced that this was an exceptional result valid for the Bush elections on…

  • Age patterns of smoking in US black and white women of childbearing age

    A T Geronimus, Lisa Neidert et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1993•Cited by: 18•References: 15

OBJECTIVES. The purpose of the study was to describe age patterns of smoking among Black and White women of reproductive age, with cohort membership controlled for. METHOD. Data from the 1987 National Health Interview Survey Cancer Supplement, weighted to be nationally representative, were used to calculate the fractions of women who were ever smokers, quitters, and current smokers by age and race. Summary distributions of age patterns of smoking…

  • A note on the measurement of hypertension in HHANES

    A T Geronimus, Lisa Neidert et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1990•Cited by: 2•References: 10

Using data from the HHANES, we found the rates of elevated blood pressure readings on clinical examination to be extremely low for a sample of Mexican American and Puerto Rican women. The prevalence rates were one-fourth to one-fifth the rates found for a comparable sample of White women from NHANESII. These findings are discrepant with the little that is known about hypertension prevalence among Hispanics and with estimates of hypertension preva…

  • Assimilation in the United States: An Analysis of Ethnic and Generation Differences in Status and Achievement

    Lisa Neidert, Lisa J Neidert et al.•ARTICLE•American Sociological Review•1985•Cited by: 83•References: 2

This paper uses a new data source to investigate differences in occupational achievement among a large number of ethnic groups. The November, 1979 Current Population Survey is a unique source since it provides information on both the ancestry and nativity of a large national sample of respondents. These data are particularly valuable because they permit the identification of first-, secondand thirdor higher-generation individuals, thereby providi…

  • Inequality and the Relative Size of Minority Populations: A Comparative Analysis

W Parker Frisbie, Lisa Neidert•ARTICLE•American Journal of Sociology•1977•Cited by: 63

Socioeconomic differentials separating whites and blacks have been shown to correlate positively with the percentage of blacks in a population. However, in multiracial or multiethnic populations, it is necessary to take into account the effects of the relative size of each minority present in nonnegligible numbers. In the research reported here, the relationship between socioeconomic inequality and the proportion of Mexican Americans and blacks i…
