  • Affective governmentality and the emotional life of journalism across biographical transitions

Open Access•Mojca Pajnik, Maja Breznik et al.•ARTICLE•Journalism•2026

This article examines the emotional dynamics underpinning journalists’ professional transitions, positioning affect as central to the modality of governance in the media. We address a gap in understanding how journalists experience and manage work-related emotional dynamics throughout their professional trajectories. Drawing on the concepts of affective governmentality and manufacturing consent, we conceptualize affect as socially and institution…

  • The “best interest of a child” in anti-gender mobilizations

Roman Kuhar, Ayşe Alnıaçık et al.•ARTICLE•European Journal of Politics and…•2026

Researchers of anti-gender mobilizations emphasize the central role of child well-being narratives, yet this aspect remains underexplored. This article addresses that gap by focusing on how the “best interest of a child” is strategically used in anti-gender campaigns across Denmark, Italy, Poland, Slovenia, Spain, and Turkey. Using framing theory, we analyze how this frame is constructed, emotionally charged, and politically instrumentalized. Bas…

  • Gender ideology’ as the master frame

  • Enhancing the hybrid media system model

    Open Access•Rok Smrdelj, Mojca Pajnik•ARTICLE•European Journal of Communication•2025•References: 32

In this article, we propose a theoretical reconceptualization of the hybrid media system model by introducing structural and material conditions of contemporary media sphere with reference to critical theory. Our main thesis is based on the principle of historicization and the concept of social relations. Using this framework, we demonstrate that those who wield dominant power within the neoliberal capitalist economy also have influence over the …

  • Simulating Agonism

    Open Access•Rok Smrdelj•ARTICLE•Religions•2025•References: 19

This study examines how anti-gender actors represent themselves as legitimate participants in debates on equality politics. Drawing on Mouffe's distinction between agonism and antagonism, we argue that anti-gender actors foster conflict and exclusion through "moral panic" and the "politics of fear" regarding the issues related to equality politics, while at the same time presenting themselves as neutral, rational, and pluralistic. This dual strat…

  • Communication Relations on Twitter During the Migrant “Crisis” in Slovenia

    Open Access•Rok Smrdelj•ARTICLE•Two Homelands•2024•References: 5

The article explores communication relations on Twitter during the 2015–2016 migrant “crisis” in Slovenia. By integrating social network analysis with critical discourse studies, the author finds that the “left-wing” political network had the most members. In contrast, the “right-wing” political network was notably more influential and active. The political elite, mass media, journalists, and public figures are among the most influential users. A…

  • Intersectional representation in online media discourse

    Open Access•Rok Smrdelj, Mojca Pajnik•ARTICLE•Gender Technology and Development•2022•Cited by: 2•References: 13

The theory of intersectionality has been broadly used in various research but we notice a persistent gap in reflecting its application to media analysis. In our study, we focus on the concept of “representational intersectionality” which Kimberlé Crenshaw uses to illustrate the dynamics between different discourses. Taking the example of online media reporting on same-sex partnerships in Slovenia, we analyze how power relations are reinforced whe…

  • Knjižna ocena - Lorella Viola in Andreas Musolff (ur.), Migration and Media

    Open Access•Rok Smrdelj•ARTICLE•Two Homelands•2022

Raziskovanje migracij in medijev odlikuje izjemno obsežna in bogata raziskovalna dinamika, ki jo določata področji »migracije v medijih« in »mediji v migracijah«.

  • Marginalizacija intersekcijske perspektive

Rok Smrdelj, Tjaša Učakar et al.•ARTICLE•Javnost - The Public•2021

Področje intersekcijske diskriminacije v Sloveniji ni neraziskana tema, a še nobena od analiz ni v ospredje postavila vprašanja intersekcije (medijskih) reprezentacij. Članek v izhodišče postavlja raziskovalno vprašanje, kako diskurz medijskih tekstov na novičarskih spletnih portalih v Sloveniji naslavlja vprašanja diskriminacije in družbenega izključevanja v luči intersekcijskega pristopa. V raziskavi smo se ukvarjali z intersekcijo reprezentaci…
