  • Provinciaux en Dacie, provinciaux de Dacie

    Open Access•Dan Dana•CHAPTER•Quis sum ? Provincialis ?•2022

In the border zone between the Roman provinces of Upper Moesia and Thrace a sanctuary dedicated to Zeus and Hera, defined by the toponymic epithet Souidept?noi, was discovered on the Belava mountain, near Turres (today?s Pirot). The sanctuary presumably encompassed a temenos, an altar and two smaller temples, oriented east-west, with the entrance on the eastern side. Unfortunately, illegal excavations were conducted on the area of the sanctuary b…

A part of the scholarly correspondence between two major epigraphists of the XXth century, Louis Robert (1904-1985) and Georgi Mihailov (1915-1991), is edited and commented in this article. From their epistolary exchange, unfortunately incomplete, 17 letters (including 15 from Mihailov, and only two from Robert) were found in the archives of Paris and Sofia. They allow to follow their collaboration during the two decades after the end of the Seco…

At the present stage of the research, 12 fibulae with canid protome (germ. Tierkopffibeln) were discovered on the territory of Romania. With the exception of one item from Ocniţa (Wallachia), all the other fibulae come from the Eastern Carpathians area (Eastern Romania). These fibulae provide some valuable clues to the local chronology and allow some insight into the phenomena of imports circulation and acculturation in pre-Roman Dacia

  • On Some Dacian Names from Tyras and Olbia

    Open Access•Dan Dana•ARTICLE•Вопросы ономастики•2017

This article contains a short list of Dacian personal names recorded in two Greek cities of the northern Black Sea region, Tyras and Pontic Olbia. The author provides a linguistic and epigraphic commentary on the names of a clearly Dacian origin (and distinct from Thracian names, as the recent fi ndings indicate) and then proceeds to a historical analysis of these onomastic data. The study shows that almost all the bearers of Dacian names (idiony…

  • A Hitherto Unrecognised Cornovian on a Roman Military Diploma ( RMD I, 35)

    Open Access•Dan Dana•ARTICLE•Britannia•2017

A military diploma of 2 July a.d . 133 ( RMD I, 35), first discovered in 1960 but published several times since, has provoked a debate concerning the origin of the discharged soldier, with commentators proposing either Corinium in Britain or the Cornacates in Lower Pannonia. The new reading presented here suggests that the soldier was actually Cornovian, allowing a reassessment of the recruitment of Brittones in the Roman auxilia

  • Quatre diplômes militaires fragmentaires

    Open Access•Dan Dana, Florian Matei-Popescu•ARTICLE•Tyche•2017

The epigraphic record pertaining to the auxiliary fort from Buciumi is quite scarce. This is especially true for onomastic evidence, indeed virtually none of the members of the local garrison is known to us by name. The graffito discussed in the paper, although incomplete, reveals the names of two individuals: a centurion and a common soldier. While the name of the centurion (Genialis) is quite usual, the miles displays an extremely rare name of …

  • Religion in contact, Thrace

    Open Access•Dan Dana•CHAPTER•The Encyclopedia of Ancient History•2016

Thracian religion remains a difficult debate, requiring a cautious examination of literary, epigraphic, and archaeological evidence. The evolving religious beliefs of Thracians, despite their internal diversity, are always considered through the prism of Greek and Roman sources and perspectives. Recent discoveries allow us to clarify the picture of the Thracian area, defined by the will of integration (in Greek or Roman manners) and the expressio…
