Revisiting the relationship between height and lifespan in an urban setting
This article analyzes the relationship between human height and longevity in the urban town of Zaragoza (and its surrounding rural areas) among 11,441 men born between 1886 and 1908. Attention is devoted to population urban-rural differences (a proxy of the food access facility and population density). Previous studies on this topic have not yielded conclusive results. There is still debate as to whether there is a significant relationship betwee…
Migration networks in the configuration of mining communities in Spain in the nineteenth century
This research examines migration in Linares during the third quarter of the nineteenth century, focusing on migration chains. The city experienced a significant increase in population due to the mining boom, which led to an almost sixfold increase in the population over a period of 30 years. Using data from the 1873 population register, which includes more than 22,500 individuals, this study confirms the effectiveness of the migration chain frame…

The persistence of social inequality in adult mortality in rural Spain, death cohorts 1546–1940
This paper analyses social inequality in adult mortality in rural Aragon (Spain) between the mid-sixteenth and mid-twentieth centuries. Using funeral wills as an indicator of social status up to the late eighteenth century, and occupational records from tha…
Life and death under son preference
Based on longitudinal micro data from 13 Spanish rural villages between 1800 and 1910, this paper assesses whether discriminatory practices affected fertility and sex-specific mortality in infancy and childhood during economic crises. Our contribution is twofold. On the one hand, there is a connection between short-term economic stress, fertility, and sex ratios at baptism: high-price years were followed by a decline in the number of registered b…
Social inequality in mortality in rural Spain (1860-2010)
This study investigates the role of education in shaping social disparities in mortality in rural Spain over the past 150 years. On the basis of individual-level life-course microdata on around 40,000 individuals, it examines variables such as socio-economic status, age at death, and various family, cultural, and environmental factors. An event history analysis tracks the lifespans of all individuals who died at age 25 or older in 17 villages. Ou…
Social inequalities in adult mortality across Europe (18th-21st centuries)
