  • Heimen . Lokalhistoria inn i eit nytt tusenår. Del 2 (1995–2022)

    Open Access•Leidulf Melve•ARTICLE•Heimen•2023

  • Heimen . Erkjenningsinteresser, redaksjonell profil og innhald. Del 1 (1922–1994)

    Open Access•Leidulf Melve•ARTICLE•Heimen•2023

  • Historisk tidsskrift 1945–2020

    Open Access•Leidulf Melve•ARTICLE•Historisk tidsskrift•2021

    Open Access•Leidulf Melve•ARTICLE•Heimen•2021

  • Ecclesiastical Reform in Historiographical Context

    Open Access•Leidulf Melve•ARTICLE•History Compass•2015•References: 6

The article initially discusses recent approaches to ecclesiastical reform and the Investiture Contest. In particular, it discusses the extent to which recent scholarship's concern with “power,” “local units,” “social aspects,” “discourse,” and “gender” has undermined earlier master narratives – accentuating as these did the unity of reform. The last part of the article argues for the need to establish new master narratives and puts forward a few…

  • The Public Debate on Clerical Marriage in the Late Eleventh Century

    Open Access•Leidulf Melve•ARTICLE•The Journal of Ecclesiastical…•2010•Cited by: 1•References: 1

The article offers an analysis of the public debate on priestly marriage, conducted in the last decades of the eleventh century. This was the first debate on the subject in six hundred years, erupting in the context of the reform movement. Although the theme of priestly marriage was mentioned in the Carolingian period as well as in the tenth and first half of the eleventh century, it was the anonymous defence of clerical marriage, the Epistola de…

    Open Access•Leidulf Melve•ARTICLE•Journal of Medieval History•2008•References: 1

The Investiture Contest has at regular intervals been considered as a ‘revolution’, largely because it contributed forcefully to the reorganisation of the Church in the centuries to come. But the Contest has also been seen as heralding a new and more critical way of thinking, in which the traditional reliance on authorities was giving way to new approaches to the textual past. These new approaches are best evident in an extensive polemical litera…

  • The revolt of the medievalists'. Directions in recent research on the twelfth-century renaissance

    Open Access•Leidulf Melve•ARTICLE•Journal of Medieval History•2006•Cited by: 18

This historiographical article contains two basic parts. First, it discusses recent approaches to the twelfth-century renaissance in the last two decades by focusing on some selected themes. These themes basically derive from Charles Homer Haskins' notion of the renaissance and include individualism, rationality, secularisation, and the question of the emergence of a 'critical mentality.' From this point of departure, the article addresses the qu…
