  • Predictive Modeling of Prehistoric Site Distribution in the Southeastern Sulawesi Karst Landscape Using MaxEnt

Open Access•Yadi Mulyadi, Hermawan Hermawan et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Open Archaeology Data•2025

This study employs a predictive modeling approach using the MaxEnt (Maximum Entropy) algorithm to estimate the potential distribution of prehistoric archaeological sites across the karst landscape of the southeastern arm of Sulawesi Island. This region, which includes the karst zones of Matarombeo, Mekongga, Tangkelemboke, and Sombori, possesses high archaeological potential yet remains largely unexplored. By integrating presence data from 64 pre…

  • The barkcloth beater of Sulawesi and its changes over time

    Open Access•Muhammad Nur, Hasanuddin et al.•ARTICLE•Antiquity•2025•References: 15

The tradition of beating bark to produce cloth probably emerged in South China before spreading to Island Southeast Asia with the Austronesian cultural expansion (5000-3500 BP). Type IV barkcloth beaters found on the island of Sulawesi mark a technological leap from mainland examples and the discovery of 16 such beaters at Buttu Batu pushes the local adoption of this type back to c. 2111-1933 BP. Combining archaeological examples with extensive e…

  • Possible Traces of Early Malay Settlement in South Sulawesi

M Hadrawi, Nuraidar Agus et al.•ARTICLE•Indonesia and the Malay World•2022

Indigenous written sources and local tradition attribute the emergence of the Bugis kingdom of Suppa on the west coast of South Sulawesi (Indonesia) to events in the 15th century. A founding female figure emerged from the sea with her entourage and, together with a ‘descended’ male figure, established the various kingdoms in the Ajattappareng area. Details in the story and persistent memory suggest the presence of Malays from Melaka. Given the na…

    Open Access•Balai Arkeologi Sulawesi Selatan, Suryatman et al.•ARTICLE•SPAFA Journal•2021•Cited by: 2•References: 33

Since the recent discovery of Late Pleistocene rock art in Island Southeast Asia was announced, evidence for symbolic behaviour in the region has become a focus of international archaeological interest. South Sulawesi is one region that hold much evidence for this important human activity. In addition to the cave paintings, several engraved stone artefacts have also been recovered in the same area, nearly all of which date back to the Late Pleist…

  • Interaction Between the Toalean and Austronesian Cultures in the Mallawa Area, Maros District, South Sulawesi

Open Access•Hasanuddin, Drs Bernadeta AKW et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Indo-Pacific Archaeology•2020

The Mallawa area lies 92 km northeast of Makassar city and 62 km east of Maros township, in South Sulawesi, Indonesia. Previous research points to an indigenous population named the Toalean and here we demonstrate its presence in the Mallawa area by around 6500–7000 BP, before the immigration of Neolithic Austronesians at around 3580 BP. Distinctive Toalean artefacts are geometric microliths, blades and Maros points, while distinctive Austronesia…
