  • The Memory State

    Open Access•Sue A S Iamamoto•ARTICLE•Bulletin of Latin American Research•2026

This article analyses the politics of memory in Bolivia from the so‐called Gas War in 2003 and the crisis of 2019, travelling from a struggle for power to state's legitimation language and back to the streets. It also studies dissident movements that claimed reparation from the Plurinational State, particularly human rights activists and the regional movement of Potosí. I define the Plurinational State as a ‘memory state’ that, by strongly tying …

  • Young entrepreneurs and peripheral utopias in the south zone of São Paulo

    Open Access•Henrique Costa, Sue A S Iamamoto•ARTICLE•Revista Brasileira de Estudos…•2025

Grounded in an ethnographic study tracing the trajectories of four young people from the southern periphery of the city of São Paulo, this article investigates how entrepreneurship has developed as the other face of peripheral culture. Conceptualized as a utopian cultural form of self-employment, this study argues that entrepreneurship redefines the horizons of expectation that were once central to the lives of residents living on the periphery –…

  • Junho e anti-Junho

    Open Access•Sue A S Iamamoto, Rani Teles et al.•ARTICLE•Opinião Pública•2025•References: 18

  • Traditional development or vivir bien? An analysis of the Bolivian ‘Gas War’ in 2003

    Open Access•Sue A S Iamamoto, Sue Iamamoto•ARTICLE•Alternautas•2022

Since Evo Morales’ arrival to the Palacio Quemado and the nomination of David Choquehuanca as the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bolivian international policy has been marked by a rhetoric of environmentalism, defence of indigenous rights and cosmovisions, and the promotion of vivir bien (good living) as a new paradigm of development. This piece investigates the narratives that the actors of the mobilisations in 2003 — both in the urban context, in …

  • “Culture War” against Brazilian universities

    Open Access•Valesca Lima, Sue A S Iamamoto et al.•ARTICLE•Alternautas•2022

The declared war against the tertiary education sector in Brazil comes together with severe budget cuts to the federal education system, increasing the threats to academic freedoms and episodes of violence targeting students and academic staff and a scheme to open public universities to private sector investment and management. These cuts are part of broader neoliberal policies that directly attack social rights by transforming them into commodit…

  • Layers of Indigenous Citizenship

    Open Access•Sue A S Iamamoto•ARTICLE•Journal of Latin American Studies•2022•Cited by: 2•References: 18

This article explores the complexity of Indigenous citizenship in contemporary Bolivia through the analysis of a land dispute involving the Indigenous people of Coroma and a neighbouring Indigenous group. The Coromeños understand their rights as stemming from the colonial, republican and plurinational periods: their citizenship is thus described as 'time-layered'. This study highlights the importance of the image of the state for practices of Ind…

  • Brazilian far-right neoliberal nationalism

    Sue A S Iamamoto, Maíra Kubík Mano et al.•ARTICLE•Globalizations•2021•Cited by: 6•References: 11

This paper offers an interpretation of the ideology expressed by Jair Bolsonaro, current president of Brazil, as a Brazilian far-right neoliberal nationalism, which typically distinguishes between the members of the nation and its traitors and enemies, creating an authoritarian atmosphere of governance combined with the defense of neoliberal values. To establish the bases that sustain this ideology, we investigate four key arenas of his administr…

This article offers a review of the recent trajectories of political ecologies as communities of practice and movements for environmental justice, as well as a paradigm of scientific analysis. In this introduction to the 2021 special issue "Decolonial Insurgencies and Emancipatory Horizons: contributions from Political Ecology" of the Ambiente & Sociedade journal, we present a reflection on the contemporary socio-environmental reality, characteri…

Open Access•Caroline Cotta De Mello Freitas, Rafaela N Pannain et al.•ARTICLE•Cadernos de Campo (São Paulo 1991•2018•Cited by: 1

  • Home-made development in Bolivia

    Open Access•Sue A S Iamamoto•ARTICLE•Civitas - Revista de Ciências…•2017•Cited by: 1•References: 4

    Open Access•Sue A S Iamamoto•ARTICLE•Lua Nova Revista de Cultura e…•2016•Cited by: 1•References: 3
