Conspiracy talk in the lives of ordinary Americans
This paper examines how ordinary Americans engage in unprompted conspiracy talk when discussing their daily lives. Drawing on a representative sample of 1,612 life course interviews from the “American Voices Project”, we explore how conspiracy theories surface in reflections on topics people consider important—such as relationships, employment, religion, and politics. Using both computational and qualitative analysis, we identify instances of con…
Religion, media, and democracy in the Nordic countries
This article provides an overview of empirical research at the intersection between religion, democracy, and media in the Nordic countries. Based on a scoping review of 46 studies published between January 2011 and June 2024, we identify how scholarly attention has concentrated on Islam and Muslim minorities, often in the context of mediatised conflict, securitisation, or cultural tension. The studies commonly focus on practices through which mai…
Europe in the Age of Post-Truth Politics
This book explores the impact of the phenomenon of post-truth politics on European integration and the European Union. This is an open access book
Conceptualizing Populism about/in/as Religion
Recent changes in political leadership and the digital saturation of public life have foregrounded the multiple ways in which populism and religion are connected in the Nordic media sphere. A systematic conceptualization of the relationship in political science, the study of religion, and media and communication studies, however, has been slow to develop. We contribute to this conceptual development by suggesting a typology for studying the inter…
Mediating shame and pride
This article adopts a comparative qualitative approach to studying the rhetoric of injured pride in the coverage of Independence Day celebrations by the right-wing countermedia in Poland (wPolityce.pl) and the US (Breitbart News) from 2012 to 2018. In both countries, the number of countermedia articles on Independence Day proliferated in the aftermath of the election of the Law and Justice party (2015) and Donald Trump (2016). Based on the analys…
Soldiers of Odin as Peril or Protection? Hybrid Mediatization of Oppositional Framings on Anti-Immigration Responses to the ‘Refugee Crisis’
Conspiracies beyond Fake News. Produsing Reinformation on Presidential Elections in the Transnational Hybrid Media System
As presidential elections carry the promise of distilling the contested and elusive 'will of the people,' the protracted media event intensifies the public demand for exposing the transgressions of the aspiring political elite. This expectation provides fertile ground for investigative journalism, ultrapartisan smear campaigns, fake news, and full-fledged conspiracy theories that are sometimes difficult to differentiate from one another in a hybr…
Politicization of migration in the countermedia style
Countermedia are ultrapartisan media outlets that position themselves in opposition to the mainstream media and ‘the establishment’. In this article, we analyse the countermedia style and its adoption by parliamentarians, particularly in the politicization of migration, in the case of Finland. We conduct an analysis of large datasets of text from Finnish countermedia, mainstream media and parliamentary speeches from 2015 to 2017, based on computa…
