The emergence of the Finnish edible insect arena: The dynamics of an ‘Active Obstacle’
Living food diet and veganism: Individual vs collective boundaries of the forbidden
The article compares two distinctly modern dietary movements of the 20th century: the living food diet and veganism. It shows that, although food is one of the principal areas where nature and culture converge, in modern society eating is no longer a mere problem of classification (edible/non-edible); it has also become the object of strong emotional and moral investments. Both living foodism and veganism emphasize the importance of 'natural' foo…
Sacred Violence: Girard, Bataille and the Vicissitudes of Human Desire
The article deals with two famous attempts to analyse the relationship between affective violence and the sacred, namely those made by René Girard and Georges Bataille. Despite the apparent similarities of the problems (religious sacrifice as the affective foundation of community and the primordial role of violence therein) Girard and Bataille end up with profoundly different visions of society's entire affective economy. For Girard, religious sa…
Sorcerer's Apprentices and the 'Will to Figuration: The Ambiguous Heritage of the Collège de Sociologie
The article deals with Le Collège de Sociologie, an elective organization founded in 1937 by a group of French thinkers, among whom were Georges Bataille, Roger Caillois and Michel Leiris. It tries to show how the notion of 'force' or of 'power', constitutive to the 'new mythology' the members of the Collège wanted to create, was in fact deeply ambivalent in nature. This ambivalence can be traced back to the internal ambiguities of the Durkheimia…
Rousseau, Durkheim et la constitution affective du social: Rousseau, Durkheim and the Affective Constitution of the Social
