Zen and the Way of the Sword: Arming the Samurai Psyche
Zen-serene, contemplative, a discipline of meditation associated with painting, rock gardens, and flower arranging-seems an odd ingredient in the martial psyche of the Japanese samurai. One who is a samurai must before all things keep constantly in mind...the fact that he has to die, wrote a seventeenth-century warrior. That is his chief business. But the demands of that business, writes Winston King, found the perfect philosophical match in the …

Eschatology: Christian and Buddhist
Eschatology has been defined as ~any configuration of religious myths and beliefs that recount or affirm any future happenings directly related to the ultimate destiny of man'. 1 It is the religious account of last, i.e. final, cosmichistorical events and of the final, absolute destiny of mare Before coming to the specific comparison of Christian and Buddhist eschatology two preliminary considerations are in order. First is the question as to whe…

Buddhist-Christian Dialogue Reconsidered
My first writing about the possibility of Buddhist-Christian dialogue, Buddhism and Christianity: Some Bridges of Understanding (London: 1963), was one result of my first-ever contact with a Buddhist culture, that of the Burmese. It was pleasant to write, for I had found the Burmese charmingly unpretentious, friendly, and nonaggressive in their explanations of Buddhism. Hence the writing was done in a fully ecumenical mood on my part; I tried in …

The Structure and Dynamics of the Attainment of Cessation in Theravada Meditation
The attainment of cessation (nirodha-samāpatti) is the highest meditational state possible in Theravada Buddhism. Those in this state are to all appearances dead, for it is the extinction of all feeling and perception, continuing for as long as seven days. It is seen as the actual realization of Nibbana in this life. The basic technique of this achievement is yogic. The meditator proceeds through four jhānic states, each one of deeper concentrati…

THIS PAPER will concern itself with two variant types of causal theory found in Indian philosophy in the eighth and ninth centuries. One of these is Hindu, that of Sarhkara, the great commentator of Veddnta. The other is that of two Buddhist dialectical logicians, Sgntarakqita and his disciple-commentator Kamalasila, who in their general position are somewhere in the idealist Yogdcara and nihilist Mddhyamika vicinity. The Quest: History and Meaning in Religion
In The Quest Mircea Eliade stresses the cultural function that a study of the history of religions can play in a secularized society. He writes for the intelligent general reader in the hope that what he calls a new humanism be engendered by a confrontation of modern Western man with unknown or less familiar worlds of meaning. Each of these essays contains insights which will be fruitful and challenging for professional students of religion, but …
