  • Meindert Fennema: Political Theory in Polder Perspective

    Open Access•Dante Germino•ARTICLE•The Review of Politics•2001•References: 2

The polder—a strip of land redeemed from the sea—is a symbol in the Dutch collective consciousness for the successful struggle against threatening inundations. Implicit in this struggle is the idea of strong civic communities, because cooperation is mandatory in the building of dikes to keep out the water. It is therefore appropriate to describe the work of Meindert Fennema currently one of the Netherland's leading political theorists, as a view …

  • Blasphemy and Leo Strauss's Machiavelli

    Open Access•Dante Germino•ARTICLE•The Review of Politics•1991•Cited by: 3•References: 1

In 1966, I published a review article hailing Leo Strauss's Thoughts on Machiavelli as an instant classic. I also expressed some reservations or “second thoughts” about its conclusions. In the intervening years my appreciation for the profundity and originality of Strauss's interpretation has only increased, but many of my doubts have also remained. Here I wish to restate both my admiration and reservations with particular attention to parts of S…

    Dante Germino•ARTICLE•boundary 2•1986

    Open Access•Dante Germino•ARTICLE•American Political Science Review•1978•Cited by: 2

Eric Voegelin's evaluation of politics is grounded in the symbols and experiences which illumine man's participation in the process of reality. The trail of symbols and equivalent experiences whic constitute history provides the fundamental criteria by which the language of politics is to be evaluated. The central philosophical symbol is the Between (metaxy), coined by Plato. It indicates that human existence is a tension between the poles of the…

  • Some Observations on Recent Political Philosophy and Theory

    Open Access•Dante Germino•ARTICLE•The Annals of the American…•1972

The past five years have marked a creative period for political philosophy and theory. Pronounced as dead or dying by some observers only a decade or so ago, there has been, more recently, a recognition of a significant renaissance in this age-old tradition of inquiry. Major figures doing independent and original work in political philosophy are discussed; then the significant outpouring of studies in the history of political thought is treated. …

    Dante Germino•ARTICLE•New Literary History•1970

T --HE question I propose to consider is whether it is meaningful to speak of political and if so on what grounds and with what qualifying observations. This is obviously a vast problem, and within the limits of an essay one can hope at best only to illustrate some of the difficulties involved and to throw out some hints at their possible resolution. The conventional periodization adopted in histories of political thought assumes that a profound …
