Curation as Manifesto. Thoughts on Exhibition-Making and Societal Transformation
Neighborhood Disadvantage, Peer Acceptance, and Sense of Belonging among Middle School Students
Prior studies have demonstrated how living in economically disadvantaged and dangerous neighborhoods is associated with poorer developmental outcomes including depressed academic achievement, poorer physical and mental health, and lower school engagement. At the same time, studies have shown peer acceptance and school belonging are closely connected such that when youth feel more accepted by their classmates, they feel happier and more secure and…
Nonstandard Work and Preschool Child Development in Single Mother Families: Exploring the Role of Maternal Depression and Parenting Stress
This study investigates whether there are differences in preschool children’s cognitive, social, and behavioral development in families where mothers work nonstandard hours (i.e., night, evening, rotating) compared to regular hours. We also explore the role maternal stress and depression may play in explaining children’s differences in cognitive and socioemotional development within single mother families. Multivariate hierarchical analyses were …
Curatorship for meaning making: Contributions towards symbolic reparation at the Museum of Memory of Colombia
This article examines via case study research the ways in which diverse actors made sense and gave meaning to an exhibition related to armed conflict and reparation in Colombia. Voces para transformar a Colombia (Voices for the Transformation of Colombia, 2018) was a temporary, ‘living museum’ which presented the Museum of Memorýs storyline (a national museum still in planning) to the public. This museum was recently ordered by the Law for Victim…
Educational inequality in Colombia: Family background, school quality and student achievement in Cartagena
This study examines the effects of family socio‐economic disadvantage and differences in school resources on student achievement in the city of Cartagena, Colombia. Using data from the ICFES and C‐600 national databases, we conduct a multilevel analysis to determine the unique contribution of school‐level factors above and beyond family background. The results from the hierarchical linear models show that while family socio‐economic background si…
Ability Grouping Practices in Elementary School and African American/Hispanic Achievement
This study examines the impact of ability grouping practices on the achievement gains among African Americans and Hispanics during elementary school. Using data from the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study, the results strongly support the differential effects hypothesis of ability grouping. That is, students who are lower grouped for reading instruction learn substantially less, and higher‐grouped students learn slightly more over the first few y…
Race, Racial Concentration, and the Dynamics of Educational Inequality Across Urban and Suburban Schools
This study uses national data from the National Educational Longitudinal Study to model educational inequality as a feedback process among course placement, student engagement, and academic achievement, separately for students in schools with high and low percentages of African American students. Results find strong effects of placement, engagement, and performance on one another over time and across both school types. However, the results also s…
Employment, Work Conditions, and the Home Environment in Single-Mother Families
This study investigates the impact of employment status and work conditions on the quality of the home environment provided by single mothers of preschool-age children. Multivariate analyses were conducted using data from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth. The results indicate that employment status is not a significant predictor of the quality of the home environment among single mothers of young children when family size and welfare use…
Do skills and behaviors in high school matter? The contribution of noncognitive factors in explaining differences in educational attainment and earnings
Path Analysis
Does Oppositional Culture Exist in Minority and Poverty Peer Groups
