Methamphetamine use and HIV prevention
Methamphetamine use often co-occurs with sexual behaviors that may increase HIV acquisition risk and disrupt adherence to HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP). To explore barriers and opportunities for PrEP among people who use methamphetamine, we conducted semi-structured interviews with 28 self-reported HIV-negative adults (ages 18–55) with current moderate-to-high risk methamphetamine use in the New York City metropolitan area. Transcripts were…
Fostering Motivation for Practice Change
“It's my frenemy”
Background: Exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic and the proliferation of fentanyl and fentanyl analogs, overdose deaths have surged in the United States, making it important to understand how individuals who use drugs experience and perceive the risks of fentanyl use and how it has changed during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: Twenty clients from a Philadelphia syringe services program completed a questionnaire and in-depth interview about thei…
Project Management Principles for Optimizing Publication Productivity of Mixed Methods Studies
Mixed methods research is increasingly valued, although little attention has been placed on how to execute such projects well to achieve optimal publication for impact. Multiple publications from a single study allow scholars to explicate findings that cannot be contained in a single article and which address different aspects of study findings. This article contributes to the fields of mixed methods research by building on their roots in pragmat…
Two decades of tobacco use prevention and control policies in Cameroon
Despite actions made by the Government, there is no real political will to control tobacco use in Cameroon. Significant shortcomings still exist in developing and/or implementing comprehensive tobacco use and prevention policies. These findings highlight major gaps as well as opportunities that can be harnessed to improve tobacco control in Cameroon
Assessment of the multi-sectoral approach to tobacco control policies in South Africa and Togo
Tobacco control policies in South Africa and Togo were formulated and implemented from an inter-sectoral approach perspective, which relied heavily on information transfer between stakeholders and less on collaborative problem-solving approach. Incorporation of multiple stakeholders allowed both countries to formulate policies to meet FCTC goals for tobacco control and NCD reduction
Influence of the WHO framework convention on tobacco control on tobacco legislation and policies in sub-Saharan Africa
The WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control provided an unprecedented opportunity for global action against the public health effects of tobacco including non-communicable diseases. Reviewing how six sub-Saharan countries responded to the treaty to mobilize resources and implement tobacco control policies has provided insight for how to utilise international regulations and commitments to accelerate policy impact on the prevention of non-comm…
Alcohol policies in Malawi
Malawi's national legislations and policies have inadequate inclusion of the "best buy" interventions for control of harmful use of alcohol. Effective development and implementation of alcohol policies require structured organisation and collaboration of multi-sectoral actors. Sustainable financing mechanisms for the policy development and implementation processes should be considered; and the influence of the alcohol industry should be mitigated
Non-communicable disease prevention policy process in five African countries authors
NCD prevention policy process in many African countries has been influenced both by global and local factors. Countries have the will to develop NCD prevention policies but they face implementation gaps and need enhanced country-level commitment to support policy NCD prevention policy development for all risk factors and establish mechanisms to attain better policy outcomes while considering other local contextual factors that may influence polic…

Multiple Family Groups for Child Behavior Difficulties
High acceptability suggest utility for implementing MFGs within settings serving child welfare involved families, with additional modifications to tailor to setting and client features
The American Psychological Association’s Committee on Women in Psychology
The Committee on Women in Psychology (CWP) of the American Psychological Association was founded in 1973 in response to the report of the Task Force on the Status of Women in Psychology. In this article, we set the context for the founding of the task force and committee and briefly describe the history of feminist critique of, and activism within, organized psychology in the United States. From its inception to the present day, CWP has been know…
Barriers and facilitators to adolescent drug treatment
Many adolescents with substance abuse problems do not obtain treatment, and there has been no systematic exploration of perceived barriers to starting care from multiple stakeholders. This article describes adolescent, parent, and treatment staff perceptions of barriers and facilitators to treatment. We interviewed 87 adolescents, their parents, and agency staff from three residential substance abuse treatment agencies in two states to explore ba…
The Use of Health Information Technology in Publicly-Funded U. S. Substance Abuse Treatment Agencies
Drug and alcohol treatment agencies are challenged to improve their infrastructure to meet growing technological and organizational demands. Health care reform and increased emphasis on performance monitoring in the United States are leading to improvements in health information technology. We assess literature to: (1) survey opportunities for health information technology for publicly-funded substance abuse treatment; (2) describe the use of ele…
Another breed of “service” animals
This study elucidates the role of pets in recovery processes among adults with serious mental illness. Data derive from interviews with 177 HMO members with serious mental illness (52.2% women, average age 48.8 years) in the Study of Transitions and Recovery Strategies (STARS). Interviews and questionnaires addressed factors affecting recovery processes and included questions about pet ownership. Data were analyzed using a modified grounded theor…
Significant Others and Gambling Treatment Outcomes
Women–Focused Treatment Agencies and Process Improvement
Behavioral health treatment agencies often struggle to keep clients engaged in treatment. Women clients often have additional factors such as family responsibilities, financial difficulties, or abuse histories that provide extra challenges to remaining in care. As part of a national initiative, four women-focused drug treatment agencies used process improvement to address treatment engagement. Interviews and focus groups with staff assessed the n…
Expression and Ambivalence over Expression of Negative Emotion
Inhibition of emotional expression has been associated with the incidence and progression of breast cancer and other chronic illnesses. The important health-related factor, however, may be ambivalence about the expression of emotions rather than repression itself. This cross-sectional analysis of baseline data from 159,557 participants in the Women's Health Initiative examined the influence of expression of negative emotion and ambivalence about …
Expression and Ambivalence over Expression of Negative Emotion
Inhibition of emotional expression has been associated with the incidence and progression of breast cancer and other chronic illnesses. Others have theorized that it may not be repression itself, but rather ambivalence over the expression of emotions that is the important health-related factor. The Women's Health Initiative (WHI), a long-term, national study focusing on disease prevention among postmenopausal women, is unique in its assessment of…
Relating health policy to women's health outcomes
Being in a Funk
Although there is literature about adults' experiences of depression, little research has focused on teenagers' experiences. In this article, the authors describe how a sample of adolescents makes sense of depression and responds to a depression diagnosis. Twenty-two adolescents participated in in-depth individual or focus group interviews. Teens discussed their experiences with depression and getting health care for depression, and described a t…
