Exploring intercultural competence in children
Intercultural competence is an essential skill in today's increasing multicultural society, including in educational settings, as it facilitates effective communication and fosters inclusivity. The Young Interpreter Scheme (YIS), developed by Hampshire Ethnic Minority and Traveller Achievement Service (EMTAS), supports English as an Additional Language (EAL) learners by training their peers to provide linguistic and cultural assistance. This stud…
Effective Teachers of Multilingual Learners
This convergent parallel mixed‐method study (quan + QUAL) relies on systematic classroom observations of mainstream teachers considered highly effective with multilingual learners in the United Kingdom and the United States (N = 9). Using a critical sociocultural theoretical lens, we use an established quantitative observation rubric and lesson field notes to capture real‐world teaching practices. Using deductive reasoning to merge closed‐ and op…

Explaining the Diversity in Malay-English Code-Switching Patterns
Bilingual speakers often engage in code-switching, that is the use of lexical items and grammatical features from two languages in one sentence. Malaysia is a particularly interesting context for the study of code-switching because Malay-English code-switching is widely practiced across formal and informal situations, and the available literature reveals that there is a great diversity in switch patterns in this language pair. One of the most rem…
Training teachers for phonics and early reading
Background In England, instruction in systematic synthetic phonics is the first approach to teaching children to read words. There is little research exploring what makes successful training for phonics teaching despite evidence teachers' subject knowledge is limited. There is a persisting problem of underachievement in reading in some regions of England, mirrored in the United States and Australia. In 2017–2018, the Department for Education (DfE…
Teachers and Polish children
This article presents original insights into the English learning experiences of Polish children and contributes a longitudinal perspective on teachers’ relationships with them. Data from interviews conducted in 2016 with primary school teachers, Polish children and their parents are compared with outcomes from an earlier study ending in 2009, in order to examine whether teachers’ practice for their Polish children has persisted or changed. Previ…
Linguistic capital and the linguistic field for teachers unaccustomed to linguistic difference
Teachers in classrooms throughout England are facing a shifting demographic in their pupil intake. Where the teaching of children whose first language was not English was once considered an inner-city teachers' role, more recent migration patterns have challenged this preconception. In England in particular, this change sits against an historical backdrop of centralised control of the curriculum for English. This article explores how primary scho…

Inside the Rust Belt
The decline in manufacturing employment in the West Midlands Region of England has been dramatic. This paper situates the changes in the economy of the region in the context of the changing international and national economies. It is argued that the shift in trading patterns from the old Empire towards Europe and North America made manufacturing sectors more vulnerable to competition both in the home market and in the overseas markets. This vulne…
Inside the Rust Belt
The economy of the West Midlands Region of England is dominated by a small number of large manufacturing companies. The analysis of the economy in this paper focuses on the corporate strategies of the twenty-six largest manufacturing companies in the region. It is shown that there has been a transformation of the companies from producers of low value-added commodity-type products in the 1960s, is also shown to more diversified companies competing…
