  • The ‘colorblindness’ of climate finance: How climate finance advances racial injustice in cities

Open Access•Sahar Zavareh Hofmann, Cs Ponder et al.•ARTICLE•City•2024•Cited by: 3•References: 17

The interactions between climate change and financial markets are increasingly becoming a topic of study, yet the ways in which climate finance reinforces new modes of racialization in urban climate adaptation projects remain an under-represented line of questioning in both academic and policy worlds. In order to uncover myriad processes of racialization occurring within financing modes that are mobilized to solve the climate crisis, this paper f…

  • The proliferation of municipal green bonds in Africa and Latin America: The need for a climate justice approach

    Open Access•H Herrera•ARTICLE•Environment and Urbanization•2024•Cited by: 4•References: 23

This paper utilizes a climate justice perspective to examine municipal green bonds (MGBs), a green-labelled debt instrument issued by subnational governmental entities, such as municipalities or cities, that determines financial, social and environmental redistributions in the context of climate change. This analysis focuses on the origins and financial construction of MGBs as the “descendant” of US municipal bonds and provides data on their rece…

  • Economic insecurity and the demand for populism in Europe

    Open Access•Luigi Guiso, H Herrera et al.•ARTICLE•Economica•2024•Cited by: 4•References: 29

We document the spiral of populism in Europe and the direct and indirect role of economic insecurity shocks. Using survey data on individual voting, we make two contributions to the literature. (i) Economic insecurity shocks have a significant impact on the populist vote share, directly as demand for protection, and indirectly through the induced changes in trust and attitudes. (ii) A key consequence of increased economic insecurity is a drop in …

  • Embedding Municipal Green Bonds in Mexico City's hydrosocial cycle: Green' debt and climate action narratives

    Open Access•H Herrera•ARTICLE•Journal of Political Ecology•2024

Mexico City's municipal "green" bonds (MGBs), issued in 2016 and 2018, financed two water infrastructure projects embedded in the city's hydrosocial cycle (the reciprocal transformation of water and society). The issuance of the MGBs created an entanglement of "green" debt and water circulation, which the city government touted as a successful "green" intervention for climate action. However, this article argues that the MGBs also masked climate …

  • The “Greening” of Empire: The European Green Deal as the EU first agenda

    Open Access•Diana Vela Almeida, Vijay K Kolinjivadi et al.•ARTICLE•Political Geography•2023•Cited by: 16•References: 25

The recent past has seen the proposal of multiple ‘Green New Deals’ across geographies as a means to fight against the climate crisis and ecological breakdown. Of these, the European Green Deal- EGD represents the world's first public commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions of at least 55% by 2030 compared to 1990 levels. Because the EGD plans to “transform the EU,” in this paper we examine how it fits within a historical continuum of colon…
