‘Design justice’ and transformative pedagogy: Experiments in globally connected learning with the global classroom for democracy innovation
The Global Classroom for Democracy Innovation (GCDI) explores the impact that critical design frameworks like ‘design justice’ can have on student experiences and capacity building. Positioning students and civil society partners as co-creators and co-designers, while designing spaces that invite lived experience and facilitate collaborative work, can offer new pathways to reanimate the higher education learning environment. These experiences, pa…
Democratic pedagogies: What are they and why do we need them
In contexts of escalating political repression, democratic backsliding, and structural inequality, this special issue explores how democratic pedagogies can serve as tools for resistance, imagination, co-creation and transformation. Grounded in love, joy, and justice, the contributions challenge dominant educational norms that commodify knowledge and silence dissent, advancing instead pedagogies rooted in relationality, reciprocity, decoloniality…

Psychic and Political Dimensions of Displacement: A Dialogue with A Social Science Perspective
This discussion focuses on two questions: How does this psychoanalytic paper help social scientists broaden their understanding of the psychic (as opposed to the social and political) experiences of displacement and citizenship? How might the clinical and theoretical psychoanalytic insights in this paper benefit from a dialogue with social scientists? I argue that Lisa Beritzhoff’s paper offers non-psychoanalytic researchers exciting and innovati…
Silent citizens and resistant texts
Political values often are formulated in local contexts in which citizens do not visibly confront public authorities. This chapter shows how political values are represented in ‘silent citizenship’ practices and in unseen ‘resistant texts’. By ‘silent citizenship’ we mean hidden, non-public repertoires and practices of civic resistance. By ‘resistant texts’ we refer to hidden and alternative narratives of the ‘everyday expressions of endogeneity’…
Defiant citizenship: Marginality, race, and the struggle for place in Hangberg, South Africa
This article examines the rise of ‘defiant citizenship’ in Hangberg, a historic fishing village set on the lower slopes of the Sentinel Mountain in Cape Town, South Africa. Defiant citizenship affirms membership of the state, but on terms that assert the primacy of residents’ right of belonging in, and sovereignty over, the place of Hangberg, even against the will of the state. This form of citizenship is rooted in long-standing experience of rac…
The limits of participatory democracy and the rise of the informal politics of mediated representation in South Africa
In general, South Africans view the formal participatory institutions of their state as ineffective mechanisms for the realization of their demands. Conversely, the reach of formalized civil society is limited in terms of policy impact, and social movements have little presence on the ground outside of the larger townships of the major metropolitan cities. In this context, the tensions between communities, civil society actors, and the state, oft…
Mediating between state and citizens: The Significance of the Informal Politics of Third-Party Representation in the Global South
This article argues that we should take more seriously the role of intermediaries in relationships between states and citizens in the global south. More specifically it holds that the practice of mediation, the third party representation of citizens to states and vice versa, is a widespread and important political practice in this context. Largely distinct from the contentious politics and popular mobilisation of social movements, mediation is mo…
Civic Agency in Africa: Arts of Resistance in the 21st Century
Examines the variety of mostly unorganized and informal ways in which Africans exercise agency and resist state power in the 21st century, through citizen action and popular culture, and how the relationship between ruler and ruled is being reframed. The recent eruption of popular protests across North Africa and the Middle East has reopened academic debate on the meaning and strategies of resistance in the 21st century. This book argues that Wes…

Rethinking 'Citizenship' in the Postcolony
This paper argues for an approach to researching citizenship and democracy that begins not from normative convictions but from everyday experiences in particular social, cultural and historical contexts. The paper starts with a consideration of the ways in which the terms 'democracy' and 'citizenship' have been used in the discourses and approaches taken within mainstream studies of citizenship and democracy, drawing attention to some of the conc…
