    Open Access•Neil T Gavin•ARTICLE•British Journal of Sociology•2021•Cited by: 5•References: 35

Framed by a literature on media coverage of welfare, “poverty porn” and “poverty propaganda,” and its emphasis on political messaging and ideology, this article explores reporting of benefit fraud in the United Kingdom. In a comprehensive and systematic assessment, it illuminates the structure and extremely large volume of benefit fraud coverage, 2008–2017, across national, sub‐national, regional and local newspapers, mainstream television, TV do…

  • Media definitely do matter

    Open Access•Neil T Gavin•ARTICLE•The British Journal of Politics…•2018•Cited by: 31•References: 27

The notion that the media’s principal role regarding public opinion is reinforcement of pre-existing attitudes – and that this idea is relative inconsequential politically – is pervasive, across many political and social science sub-disciplines, and in non-academic commentary. This article comprehensively challenges the evidential and theoretical underpinnings of this thesis, drawing on a wealth of contemporary survey data and media coverage rese…

  • Climate Skepticism in British Newspapers, 2007–2011

    John Painter, Neil T Gavin•ARTICLE•Environmental Communication•2016

Climate skepticism in the UK media has not been a major focus of recent research. This paper aims to help fill the gap by looking at the incidence of skeptical voices in UK newspapers across three periods: 2007, 2009/2010, and 2010/2011. After analyzing more than 3200 articles, it finds that skeptical voices increased their presence markedly across all newspapers and all types of articles in the second period, and maintained a significant presenc…

  • Climate change, flooding and the media in Britain

    Open Access•Neil T Gavin, Liam Leonard-Milsom et al.•ARTICLE•Public Understanding of Science•2011

The weather is a preoccupation of the British public, and flooding has become a salient feature of their experience. Climate science also has important things to say about the prevalence, distribution and dangers of rainfall and flooding, and what we should expect from global warming. This paper looks at British press coverage of flooding, and at the connections made between this theme and climate change. It aims to expose longitudinal patterning…

  • Pressure Group Direct Action on Climate Change

    Open Access•Neil T Gavin•ARTICLE•The British Journal of Politics…•2010•Cited by: 4•References: 13

This article addresses prominent, disruptive direct action around the climate change issue, in the context of comparable activity across a range of political groupings. It exposes the processes by which such activities are refracted through the conventional media and the web, in a way that comparable studies fail to do. Results suggest they garner significant but unflattering attention from the former, partly as a consequence of the persistent pr…

  • Addressing climate change

    Neil T Gavin•ARTICLE•Environmental Politics•2009•Cited by: 7•References: 41

Analysing media coverage can shed light on the politics of climate policy. Conventional notions of how the public sphere represents (or fails to represent) significant social and political issues to citizens are examined. The prominence of global warming stories in the British press is a principal focus. The contours of climate change discourse and the coverage of emissions trading are also touched upon, alongside the political implications that …

  • Television News, Economic Perceptions and Political Preferences in Britain, 1997–2001

David Sanders, Neil T Gavin et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Politics•2004•Cited by: 32•References: 33

The paper seeks to establish a simple three-stage argument. It is argued, first, that the critical proximate economic source of party preferences is heavily valenced—that what matters most to voters are the relative economic management capabilities of the main rival parties. Second, these “valenced” perceptions of party competence are themselves derived primarily from voters' economic evaluations, and in particular from their personal prospective…

  • The Press and its Influence on British Political Attitudes under New Labour

    Open Access•Neil T Gavin, David Sanders•ARTICLE•Political Studies•2003

To explore the impact of the press in Britain during the first New Labour administration, we used aggregate-level analysis to assess the relationship between the economic content of press and changes in the public's political and economic attitudes. We examine the effects on attitudes of economic coverage in the broadsheets, ‘black top’ and tabloid newspapers. The results suggest that the broadsheets and ‘black tops’ do exert an influence on vote…

  • British journalists in the spotlight

    Open Access•Neil T Gavin•ARTICLE•Journalism•2001•Cited by: 12•References: 2

The article reviews current research on the way that the EU engages with journalists. It also looks at the sort of coverage that Europe receives in the press and on television, and at the likely impact of such reports. The article suggests that a number of factors explain the rather negative coverage that Europe receives. These include tension between the EU and journalists on the Brussels news beat, a lack of commitment to effective news managem…

  • Imagining Europe

    Open Access•Neil T Gavin•ARTICLE•The British Journal of Politics…•2000•Cited by: 8•References: 21

The article considers European economic news coverage on British television and its relationship with the UK public's perceptions of and identity with Europe. Stress is placed on the symbolic content of news about Europe; stories about the economic entitlements offered to citizens within the European Union; and portrayal of material benefits or losses for Britain. The results suggest that coverage offers mixed signals about Europe. As yet, they o…

  • Television news and the economy

    Open Access•Neil T Gavin, Peter Goddard•ARTICLE•Media Culture & Society•1998•Cited by: 1•References: 25

This study looks at television coverage of the economy through analysis of the issue of inflation. A year-long corpus of material from the BBC and ITN is surveyed. The focus is on the way this medium handles explanations of the causes of inflation — and on the political implications that follow. The agenda that emerges is broadly based in political terms and reification of the economy is not found to be a common feature of the coverage. Explanati…
