The Concealed and the Revealed
Throughout his life, Petrarch was creatively tormented by the fame of his predecessor Dante, whose Commedia was by far the dominant epic poem of the Italian trecento. This article contends that the literary identity of Petrarch in his only epic poem, the Africa, is significantly contrasted with that of Dante. In Book 1, Dante’s name is explicitly unmentioned while the Commedia is presented as a model that Petrarch claims to bypass. In Book 5, the…
Identifying precontact ceramic resource areas in the boreal forest of northern Manitoba, Canada
The objective of this study is to better understand how people gained resources to make Middle and Late Woodland pottery from Sipiwesk Lake in northcentral Manitoba. To meet this objective, we conducted petrographic analyses of sediments from Sipiwesk Lake, archaeological sherds from sites around the lake, material from outwashes, fired experimental tiles, and sherds from archaeological sites across the boreal forest ecozone and the prairie ecozo…

Dante, Beatrice, and the Two Departures from Dido
It is a commonplace of Dante criticism to say that the Divine Comedy is, in many important ways, a first-person, Christian re-writing of Virgil's Aeneid.' Yet the full implications of this central fact of the Commedia's structure and meaning are still being explored and extended-so dense and so rich are the Italian poet's readings and transformations of his Latin model. One of the most complex and suggestive aspects of this master-example of inte…

Ovid's Semele and Dante's Metamorphosis
In the seventh Heaven of Paradiso, that of Saturn and of the Contemplatives, Dante is elaborately and systematically presented as a corrected, Christian Semele. The culmination of this presentation takes place just after the Pilgrim's arrival in the eighth Heavenin the context of Christ's descent and reascent in Par. XXIII. The present article seeks to investigate both how this Semele program functions and what it means in terms of the poetics of…
