Determination of Selected Harmful Substances in Baby Diapers Available on the South African Market
Baby diaper rash is a common problem, especially allergic contact dermatitis, which could be due to heavy metals, pH, formaldehyde, or allergens in the diapers. This study reports on the determination of formaldehyde, heavy metals (Pb, As, Co, Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn, Mn, Sr, Fe, and Cd), and pH in diapers purchased from low-, medium-, and high-end stores. Inductively coupled plasma was used to determine the concentrations of heavy metals after extraction…
Challenges in recruiting hard-to-reach populations focusing on Latin American recent immigrants
Purpose – Recruiting immigrant populations, particularly recent arrivals, is challenging due to lack of sampling frames and other factors. The purpose of this paper is to report the feasibility of using a quasi-random sampling strategy for recruiting recent Latin American (LA) immigrants. Design/methodology/approach – The initial recruitment strategy included random selection of two census tracts (CTs) with high concentrations and numbers of rece…
Transnational Cultural Ecologies
Canada is experiencing an evolving cultural ecology as new arrivals of immigrants now realize opportunities for sustaining familiar ties with home countries through advancing technologies and travel. Those arriving will have diverse experiences and preferences, many with opportunities for meeting their health needs elsewhere. For those less privileged, options for health care and health enabling resources are more limited as existing health syste…
Time for an ecosystem approach to public health? Lessons from two infectious disease outbreaks in Canada
Ecosystem approaches recognize the complexity of many contemporary public health challenges and offer an alternative for dealing with problems that have proven intractable and unresponsive to conventional public health strategies. Infectious disease outbreaks are among the most dramatic aspects of systems failure, and the Canadian cases of SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome) in Toronto, and the E. coli outbreak in Walkerton, serve as useful …
