Topologies of visibility
Online visibility has attracted considerable academic attention, focusing on the role of platform affordances as well as user practices in the constitution and management of visibility online. This article argues that further attention is needed to understand the topological character of this phenomenon – that is, the ways in which technological properties and user practices co-produce distinct social spaces through which online visibility is con…
On the controversiality of AI
Do public controversies about AI matter? Can they really make a difference to how AI is taken up or imposed on society? This introduction to the Special Issue on Analysing Articifial Intelligence Controversies (?) discusses how the contributing articles and commentaries address this question through original research and critical reflection. We argue that AI presents a watershed moment for the analysis of public controversies about science and te…
Mapping the epistemic geography of the intergovernmental panel on climate change (1995–2022)
This paper maps the epistemic geography of the mitigation working group (WGIII) of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). It thus contributes to the study of the science-policy interface of the IPCC and its authors. We mapped the WGIII authors’ scientific publications and created visual networks based on bibliographic coupling of the IPCC authors of Assessment Reports 2–6. We found that, over time, the scientific community behind i…
Recalcitrant audiencing
This article examines how audience analytics in filmmaking have evolved with digital platforms and AI, impacting creative decisions from concept to production. Through a case study of a Danish consultancy working at the intersection of data analytics and film production, we explore how audience insights are mobilized in creative processes. We propose the term recalcitrant audiencing to describe a mode of audience analytics that challenges filmmak…
Interfering with the black-box-tradeoff model
This paper presents and justifies Gephisto, an experimental tool visualizing networks in one click. Gephisto’s design exemplifies how we can interfere with a user’s utilitarian goals, by giving them what they wish (an easy way to get a network map) but in disobedient ways (the produced map is different every time the tool is used) that encourage them to engage further with the tool’s methodological tenets. As an apparatus, Gephisto aims to incent…
Beyond artificial intelligence controversies
Mounting critique of the way AI is framed in mainstream media calls for less sensationalist coverage, be it jubilant or apocalyptic, and more attention to the concrete situations in which AI becomes controversial in different ways. This is supposedly achieved by making coverage more expert-informed. We therefore explore how experts contribute to the issuefication of AI through the scientific literature. We provide a semantic, visual network analy…
Opening alternative data imaginaries in urban studies
Planners, policy makers, and scholars are increasingly using social media data to study public life in cities. Yet, such projects tend to be limited by three commitments that shape the imaginaries of such data-driven urbanism, namely 1) bias towards textual social media; 2) fixation on geotag-ontologies; and 3) seeing the subjective nature of data as a bias. The consequence is that the potential of digital traces for renewing the empirical ground…
Friction by Machine
This paper provides a theoretical alternative to the prevailing perception of machine learning as synonymous with speed and efficiency. Inspired by ethnographic fieldwork and grounded in pragmatist philosophy, we introduce the concept of "data friction" as the situation when encounters between held beliefs and data patterns possess the potential to stimulate innovative thinking. Contrary to the conventional connotations of "speed" and "control," …
Digital marketing as digital methods
Digital advertising is central to the business models and technological affordances of digital platforms, creating marketplaces for user attention. Despite the keen theoretical attention to the commodification of audiences in critical new media and data studies, there has been little exploration of how digital marketing can also be understood as a methodological lens to study both controversies and the practices involved in the commodification of…
Computational Ethnography: A Case of Covid-19’s Methodological Consequences
The Thick Machine
According to Clifford Geertz, the purpose of anthropology is not to explain culture but to explicate it. That should cause us to rethink our relationship with machine learning. It is, we contend, perfectly possible that machine learning algorithms, which are unable to explain, and could even be unexplainable themselves, can still be of critical use in a process of explication. Thus, we report on an experiment with anthropological AI. From a datas…
Actor-Network versus Network Analysis versus Digital Networks
Experiments with a data-public
Making publics visible through digital traces has recently generated interest by practitioners of public engagement and scholars within the field of digital methods. This paper presents an experiment in moving such methods into critical proximity with political practice and discusses how digital visualizations of topical debates become appropriated by actors and hardwired into existing ecologies of publics and politics. Through an experiment in r…
Genanvendt
Revisiting the Histories of Mapping Is There a Future for a Cartographic Ethnology
This paper revisits the cartography of material folk culture from the point of view of a current cartographic project in science and technology studies (STS) known as controversy mapping. Considering the mutual learning that has already taken place between ethnological engagements with material culture and material semiotic strands of STS, we ask, what kind of cross-fruition could be gained from expanding the dialogue to cartography and mapmaking…
Empiricist Interventions
Recent papers by prominent scholars in science and technology studies (notably John Law and Bruno Latour) have crystallized a fundamental disagreement about the scope and purpose of intervention in actor-network theory or what we here choose to bracket as empirical philosophy. While the precept of agnostic description is taken as a given, the desired effects of such descriptions are highly debated: Is the goal to interfere with the singularity of…
