  • Pottery Production at the Neolithic Site of Mulino Fiaccati/Le Rocche (Roccapalumba, Sicily): Insights from Thin-Section Petrography

Open Access•G Montana, Rebecca Pellitteri et al.•ARTICLE•Heritage•2026

The Neolithic site of Mulino Fiaccati/Le Rocche, near Roccapalumba in the Sicilian interior, has yielded an unusually rich ceramic assemblage recovered from a fissure exposed by modern quarrying. Typological analysis and a radiocarbon date of 4783–4553 BC (2σ) confirm its Middle Neolithic attribution. The ceramics include undecorated wares, Stentinello II/Western Stentinello-type pottery, and trichrome painted vessels, with a fragment tentatively…

This study presents an archaeometric investigation of 18 hydraulic rendering and bedding mortars from Punic and Hellenistic–Roman Solunto (NW Sicily). The research aimed to characterize raw materials, reconstruct manufacturing sequences, and evaluate technological proficiency through mineralogical and petrochemical analyses. X‐ray powder diffraction (XRPD), polarized light microscopy (PLM), and scanning electron microscopy with energy‐dispersive …

  • The Neolithic Site of Piano dei Cardoni in the Island of Ustica (Italy): Minero‐Petrographic and Chemical Characterization of the Ceramic Finds and Clayey Raw Materials

Open Access•G Montana, Claudia Speciale et al.•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•2026•References: 33

This paper presents the results of minero‐petrographic and chemical analyses of pottery and potential local raw materials from Ustica, a small volcanic island off the coast of Palermo (Sicily), inhabited during the Middle Neolithic. Typologically, the pottery shows cultural connections to the Bicromica and Serra d'Alto traditions, linking Ustica to Sicily and Southern Italy, as well as to the Late Neolithic Diana pottery from the Aeolian Archipel…

  • Sources of geomaterials in the Sicani Mountains during the Early Middle Ages: A case study of Contrada Castro, central western Sicily

Open Access•G Montana, Maurizio Gasparo Morticelli et al.•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•2022•References: 2

From 2017, an unknown rural settlement in Contrada Castro at Corleone (Palermo Province, western Sicily) was investigated as part of the ‘Harvesting Memories Project’. The stratigraphic sequence, supported by radiocarbon dating, has demonstrated a reoccupation of a pre‐Roman site during the transition between the Byzantine and Islamic periods. In particular, the main occupation occurred in the late 8th–9th century when pottery kilns and a probabl…

  • Multi-analytical study of the medieval wall paintings from the rupestrian church Grotta del Crocifisso at Lentini (eastern Sicily): New evidence of the use of woad (Isatis tinctoria)

Open Access•G Montana, Anna Maria Polito et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological and Anthropological…•2021•References: 14

An ethnoarchaeometric approach has been followed to identify the textural and compositional characteristics of the ceramic pastes produced in ancient Iaitas/Ietas, an indigenous site located in western Sicily on Monte Iato, a few tens of kilometres from Palermo. This approach was primarily motivated by the lack of discovered Archaic kilns or production sites/workshops and the inability to identify reference groups. Raw clays were sampled in the t…

Chemical analysis is a well-established procedure for the provenancing of archaeological ceramics. Various analytical techniques are routinely used and large amounts of data have been accumulated so far in data banks. However, in order to exchange results obtained by different laboratories, the respective analytical procedures need to be tested in terms of their inter-comparability. In this study, the schemes of analysis used in four laboratories…
