  • The Craft and Code Binary

    J A Evans, James Evans et al.•ARTICLE•Osiris•2023•References: 49

This chapter articulates the binary between craft and code that animates the volume as a whole. This binary was developed in the nineteenth century (although precedents can be identified much earlier), when it became an important element in debates about factory rationality, industrialization, and empire. It was subsequently adopted by historians, philosophers, and sociologists of science, becoming a key ingredient in the “science studies” that e…

    Open Access•Tyler Reigeluth•ARTICLE•Quaderni•2022

  • Perspectives on algorithmic normativities

    Open Access•Jérémy Grosman, Tyler Reigeluth•ARTICLE•Big Data & Society•2019•Cited by: 11•References: 21

This contribution aims at proposing a framework for articulating different kinds of "normativities" that are and can be attributed to "algorithmic systems." The technical normativity manifests itself through the lineage of technical objects. The norm expresses a technical scheme's becoming as it mutates through, but also resists, inventions. The genealogy of neural networks shall provide a powerful illustration of this dynamic by engaging with th…

    Tyler Reigeluth•ARTICLE•Multitudes•2016

  • Why data is not enough

    Open Access•Tyler Reigeluth, Tyler Butler Reigeluth•ARTICLE•Surveillance & Society•2014•Cited by: 20•References: 3

As an alternative to the seemingly natural objectivity and self-evidence of “data,” this paper builds on recent francophone literature by developing a critical conceptualization of “digital traces.” Underlining the materiality and discursiveness of traces allows us to understand and articulate both the technical and sociopolitical implications of digital technology. The philosophies of Gilbert Simondon and Michel Foucault give strong ontological …
