Studying digitally mediated sites of work through visual methods: The Cases of Coworking, Gig Work and Creative Entrepreneurship
Purpose As digital technologies increasingly mediate contemporary workplaces, ethnographic studies need to encompass on/offline work practices and workplaces. At the same time, diverse visual practices, for instance, on social media, have become a form of digital work. In this paper, we build on and expand the critical visual methodology developed by Rose (2006) to propose a multimodal framework for ethnographies of digitally mediated workplaces.…
The platform fix: Analyzing mechanisms and contradictions of how digital platforms tackle pending urban-economic challenges
Digital platforms, such as Google, Amazon, or Instagram, provide a promising spatial fix to urban-economic problems by leveraging technology and data while connecting stakeholders and overcoming spatial barriers to make urban life, consumption, sales, and production more efficient. This article contributes to the debate on digital platforms in economic geography by advancing the emerging lens of the platform fix, adopting a critical standpoint co…
Speeding up, slowing down, losing grip: On digital media metronomes and timespace friction in the platformised temporalities of fashion design
The body of literature addressing platform capitalism, platform labour and platform urbanism paints a compelling picture of how digital platforms shape the dynamics of both leisure and labour within the framework of the platform's model for extracting value. However, this literature rarely captures how the global timespaces of digital platforms are translated in platform-mediated fields of work and which frictions occur in this process. Therefore…

Creative digipreneurs: Artistic entrepreneurial practices in platform-mediated space
Digital platforms play an increasingly important role in the everyday work practices of creative entrepreneurs and contribute to how their ventures take shape. Taking this observation as a starting point, this paper aims to explore the entanglement of entrepreneurial, artistic, and creative practices and processes with digital platforms. Drawing on interviews and online observations, the study traces the work practices of two creative producers, …
Workspaces of Mediation: How Digital Platforms Shape Practices, Spaces and Places of Creative Work
This paper investigates how online platforms co‐construct spatialities of fashion design. Advancing the notion of workspaces of mediation, the article interlinks research on the geographies of creative work with debates on digital geography. It demonstrates that humans, online platforms, and spatiality are interrelated and come together in the constitution of everyday spatial encounters and experiences. Applying methods from digital ethnography, …
Computers in the Classroom: Moving from Tool to Medium
Currently the use of the computer is limited by the perception of it as a platform with advanced software tools to solve specific problems such as balancing a budget or computing grade point averages. While this is not a bad use of computers it does not fully employ their potential. By expanding our view of computer as tool to computer as medium that facilitates communication and sharing, we can fundamentally change the way we think and learn. Th…
WebQuest: Using WWW and interactive simulation games in the classroom
The World Wide Web is widely considered a successful new media for communication of ideas, a hotbed for commerce, and, more quietly, a new research media that can bring hundreds of gigabytes of useful information to classrooms around the world. However, without a structuring mechanism that allows focus on specific learning domains, the usefulness of the WWW to students is questionable. The huge information "cyberspace" is, to our children, more l…
