Juan Marchena Fernández (1954-2022)
Juan Marchena Fernández died unexpectedly at his home in Seville on October 10, 2022. He was survived by his wife, Nayibe Gutiérrez Montoya, and two children. At the time of his death, he was one of the leading authorities on eighteenth-century Spanish America and a highly influential teacher for both Spain and Latin America. His passing leaves a giant void. Marchena was born in Seville on September 12, 1954, but he grew up in the Andalusian vill…
For readers in eighteenth-century Spanish America, the Gálvez family requires little introduction. The patriarch of the clan, José, has been well known at least since Herbert Ingram Priestley's landmark study early in the twentieth century. José's nephew Bernardo won sufficient glory with his stunning victory at Pensacola to have gained posthumous recognition as an honorary citizen of the United States. Bernardo's father, Matías, became viceroy o…

The year 2017 marked the tercentennial of the Consulado de Cargadores a Indias' historic transfer from Seville to Cádiz, an anniversary that occasioned abundant commemorative activity, including the two volumes under review. Their authors are Enriqueta Vila Vilar, whose long, distinguished service in the Escuela de Estudios Hispano-Americanos has led to her incorporation into both the Real Academia Sevillana de Buenas Letras and the Real Academia…
Historians generally understand that during the colonial period Panama served as the principal crossroads for trade, both legal and illegal, between the Spanish Atlantic world and the Pacific coast of South America. After 1597, Portobelo was Spain's terminus on the Caribbean side of the commercial system, supplied until 1717 by the Galeones emanating from Seville and after 1717 from Cádiz. It connected overland to Panama City on the Pacific Ocean…
The abrupt transfer of the Casa de la Contratación and the Consulado de Cargadores a Indias from Seville to Cádiz in 1717 opened a political struggle between the two cities that would not be completely resolved until the enlightened absolutism of the Marqués de la Ensenada imposed its will. This struggle witnessed old regime politics at both their best and their worst. The present work seeks to analyze the several manifestations of this competiti…
El Supuesto Memorial Del Conde de Aranda Sobre La Independencia de América
A manuscript copy of the famous but mysterious 1783 memorial attributed to the Conde de Aranda first appeared in 1825, sent by Rafael Morant, an official in the Ministry of the Overseas Treasury, to the Duque del Infantado, the minister of state. It appeared in published form two years later in Andrés Muriel's French translation of William Coxe's history of the Bourbon dynasty (the afrancesado Spanish cleric inserted it into chapter 3 of volume 6…
La Defensa Del Imperio: Julián de Arriaga En La Armada (1700-1754)
The baylío Julián de Arriaga occupied a central place in the governance of Bourbon America, serving as secretary of the Offices for Marine and the Indies from 1754 until his death in early 1776, by far the longest stretch for any minister. Yet little was known about this figure other than his reputation for exceptional rectitude and propriety, his conservative inclinations, and his faithful service to Charles III. His background has in general be…

Set in an Atlantic world context, the book highlights the interplay between Spain and America as the Spanish empire struggled for survival amid the fierce international competition that dominated the eighteenth century. The authors use extensive research in the repositories of Spain and America, as well as innovative con…
Cardinal Alberoni and Reform in the American Empire
Carlos Martinez Shaw and Marina Alfonso Mola have recently described reign of Felipe V as the opening moment of eighteenth-century absolutism's reformist policy. The reformist agenda of Cardinal Giulio Alberoni embraced through major initiatives all four areas of what would later appear as secular sphere of Bourbon reformist agenda under Carlos III. In addition to commercial, these included innovations in administrative, fiscal, and military real…
In this ambitious volume, Dominique Goncalvès explores the relationship between the Cuban planter elite and the political powers in Madrid during the final third of the eighteenth century and the first third of the nineteenth. The central question concerns the reasons for Cuban stability at a time when continental Spanish America found itself embroiled in its struggles for independence. Published by the Casa de Velázquez, the center for French st…

Spain and the Independence of the United States: An Intrinsic Gift
In recent years, the body of literature documenting Spain’s contributions to the independence of the United States has grown steadily. Based on extensive archival research, the present volume aims at a comprehensive understanding of this “intrinsic gift.” Chávez (director of the Palace of the Governors in the New Mexican museum system) frames the Spanish contribution broadly, moving from affairs in western Europe to address the full American thea…
Lyle N. McAlister (1916–2002)
Lyle N. McAlister died on March 1, 2002, in Lakewood, Colorado, at the age of 86. His beloved wife, Geraldine, preceded him in death. A leader of the generation that shaped the field of Latin American history following the Second World War, McAlister’s writing initially focused on the eighteenth century, but over time it broadened to encompass the whole colonial period. He dedicated his entire teaching career to the University of Florida.Born and…
Cuba en la época de Ezpeleta (1785-1790)
José de Ezpeleta was a prominent royal official in both America and Spain during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. He first came to America as a junior officer in the Regiment of Navarre during Alejandro O’Reilly’s 1763–65 reformist mission to Cuba; he later gained prominence owing to his distinguished performance under Bernardo de Gálvez on the Gulf Coast during the War of the American Revolution. Serving after the war as inter…
The Social Transformation of Eighteenth-Century Cuba
Sherry Johnson addresses the impact of the reformed army upon Cuban society during the latter third of the eighteenth century and then projects the long-term significance of this experience well into the nineteenth. Her central focus is on the 1790s, and in particular, the administration of governor Luis de Las Casas, where Johnson assumes a strongly revisionist position. Researched in the appropriate archives of Spain and Cuba and in various rep…

Despite its promising start, Olavide’s career failed to sustain the …

Allan J. Kuethe, G.Douglas Inglis; ABSOLUTISM AND ENLIGHTENED REFORM: CHARLES III, THE ESTABLISHMENT OF THE ALCABALA, AND COMMERCIAL REORGANIZATION IN CUBA
French Influence and the Origins of the Bourbon Colonial Reorganization
S CHOLARS over the years have focused considerable attention on the issue of French influence on reformist policy during the Bourbon century and in particular on the reign of Charles III. This emphasis is not surprising, stemming in large part from the obvious contribution of the French philosopher to shaping the mentality of eighteenth-century progressives, including Charles III. Moreover, the well-known Third Family Compact in foreign affairs h…
The Development of the Cuban Military as a Sociopolitical Elite, 1763-83
HE reformed Bourbon military has emerged from recent literature with something less than an imposing reputation. In his pioneering work on New Spain, Lyle N. McAlister stressed the propensity of the Mexican military to engage in frivolous, damaging jurisdictional disputes, thereby clogging the administration of justice, and, in the process, ultimately undermining royal authority. One might wonder if the Mexican soldiery was capable of fighting ou…

The Jacques Barbier-John Fisher exchange in the February 1978 issue of this journal, following upon Barbier's article of February 1977, further elucidates the difficult questions concerning continuity and discontinuity in colonial policy after the death of Jose de Galvez. The arguments they advanced and their points of difference, although pregnant with implications for the whole empire, were focused on Peru and to a lesser extent, in the case of…
