To STEM or not to STEM: A cross-national analysis of gender and tertiary graduates in science, technology, engineering, and math, 1998–2018
The comparative literature on gender and higher education has increasingly focused on differences in access to the fields of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). We contribute to this literature through a cross-national analysis of STEM graduates by gender between 1998 and 2018 across 90 countries. Many earlier studies emphasize the positive influence of a global liberal culture on women. More recent scholarship contends that women …
China doll snatched away my husband’: The intersectional othering of Chinese migrant women in a Malaysian newspaper
This article examines the role of a mainstream newspaper in perpetuating the othering of an under-researched migrant sub-group in Malaysia, Chinese national women who work in low-paid jobs and the illegal sex trade. While issues surrounding these women’s economic and social vulnerability have been largely ignored in media discourse, their involvement in sex work as well as their extramarital relationships with Chinese-Malaysian men have garnered …
What Really Matters for Supervision Training Workshops? A Realist Evaluation
PURPOSE: Supervision training supports health care supervisors to perform their essential functions. Realist evaluations are increasingly popular for evaluating complex educational interventions, but no such evaluations exist appraising supervision workshops. Building on an earlier realist synthesis of supervision training, the authors evaluated whether supervision workshops work, for whom and under what circumstances, and why. METHOD: The author…

Looking Forward from Land-Grab Universities
Looking Forward from Land-Grab Universities Tristan Ahtone (bio) and Robert Lee (bio) when the nais journal editors contacted us about hosting an intervention on the Land-Grab Universities (LGU) project, we were surprised and excited. We went to press as the COVID-19 pandemic exploded and half-joked that March 2020 may have been the worst month of the century in which to publish. Partners who initially expressed interest in copublishing and inves…

Methodology: 21 first language Urdu second language Cantonese children (ages 4–6) and 20 age-matched first language Cantonese children participated in a picture-naming experiment with 86 words (109 syllables in total). Data and Analysis: Acoustic analysis was carried out for perceptually correct and incorrect tone productions…
Lexical Retention in Contact Grammaticalisation: Already In Southeast Asian Englishes
Amongst the problems of contact grammaticalisation research in past studies has been, first, the problem of searching for diachronic evidence in relatively ‘new’ language situations, something which was advocated by Bruyn (2009), amongst others as essential to contact grammaticalisation research. Because of the absence of stage-by-stage diachronic evidence for contact grammaticalisation, many cases of ordinary contact-induced grammaticalisation m…

Developing Culturally and Structurally Responsive Approaches to STEM Education to Advance Education Equity
Numerous structural and cultural barriers exist that contribute to the underrepresentation of Black/African American students in STEM disciplines and careers. This article explores how structural and cultural barriers operate to impact Black/African American students’ pursuit of STEM education and STEM careers. The authors describe structurally and culturally responsive frameworks that may address these barriers and provide specific recommendatio…

Asian Exceptions, Racial Illegibility, Relational Spaces: A Dialogue on Asian Canadian, Asian American, and US Southern Studies
The essays that follow argue for the adoption of more expansive and multifaceted approaches to understanding Asian diasporic relations within Canada and the US and between the “souths” of both nations. Lai resists hegemonic formulations that force comparisons between state powers and also assessments of the perceived “belatedness” of Asian Canadian Studies; to expand our understanding of Asian Canadian expression and relations, she argues for gre…

Possible rheumatoid arthritis found in the human skeleton collected from the tomb of Joseon Dynasty, Korea, dating back to the 1700s AD
We report a possible rheumatoid arthritis (RA) case found in a Korean Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910) tomb encapsulated by a lime-soil mixture barrier (LSMB). The tomb is thought to have been constructed during the 1700s AD (1760 AD by carbon dating). In our anthropological examination, joint destruction, erosion or fusion (signs of polyarthritis) were identified mainly in the peripheral skeleton. Especially in both sides of the wrist bones, severe de…
Children's work, earnings, and nutrition in urban Mexican shantytowns
For many children living in conditions of urban poverty, earning money can provide additional resources to them and their families, and this raises interesting questions about the potential biological consequences (costs and benefits) of children's work in ‘modern’ settings. This study uses time allocation, ethnographic, dietary, and anthropometric data collected with 96 urban Mexican shantytown children (aged 8–12 years) and their older and youn…

Effect of Race and Ethnicity Classification on Survey Estimates: Anomaly of the Weighted Totals of American Indians and Alaska Natives
Racial classification is a paramount concern in data collection and analysis for American Indians and Alaska Natives (AI/ANs) and has far-reaching implications in health research. We examine how different racial classifications affect survey weights and consequently change health-related indicators for the AI/AN population in California. Using a very large random population-based sample of AI/ANs, we compared the impact of three weighting strateg…

Sampling Telephone Numbers and Adults, Interview Length, and Weighting in The California Health Interview Survey Cell Phone Pilot Study
This article describes several features included in a California Health Interview Survey cell phone pilot study that differ from earlier cell phone surveys conducted in the United States. One difference is that the study used a screening design and only adults living in cell-only households were interviewed. Most of the previous studies used dual frame designs. Another difference was the development and implementation of a within-household adult …

Causativity reduction in Singaporean English
A common feature of Singaporean English, and found to a lesser extent in British and US English, is the “conventionalised scenario” (Goldberg 1995); i.e. a causative construction in which an intermediate causee is neither expressed nor necessarily recoverable from context and common ground, e.g. You cut your hair , in which the action is normally attributed to another, unexpressed participant. The present study provides written data on the use of…
Seniority as an employment norm: The case of layoffs and promotion in the US employment relationship
This paper investigates why seniority rules have been widely applied to both layoffs and promotion decisions in the USA. While it is shown that seniority rules can be economically efficient under certain circumstances (i.e. seniority rules can have substantive grounds), historical and empirical evidence indicates that (i) they are more popular than economic explanations would allow; (ii) they are not common outside the USA; and (iii) historically…

Differential Deviance and Social Control Mechanisms Among Two Groups of Yup'ik Eskimo
This article explores the question of whether different social control mechanisms contribute to social disorganization and consequent deviance. Two groups of Yup'ik Eskimo were compared on reported felonies and misdemeanors. One group belongs to a sovereignty movement called the "Yupi'it Nation." Some member villages in this group have abolished their own tribal courts. The other group has maintained relationships with the state of Alaska and rel…
