Old World Ceramic Origins and Behavioral Contexts from the Late Pleistocene to Mid-Holocene: Unresolved and New Problems
Variable behavioral and settlement contexts for the emergence of ceramic vessels in eastern Siberia
Tolbaga revisited: Scrutinizing occupation duration and its relationship with the faunal landscape during MIS 3 and MIS 2
The Last Glacial Maximum in northern Eurasia: Environments and human adaptations
Emergence of a microlithic complex in the Transbaikal Region of southern Siberia
Radiocarbon dates, microblades and Late Pleistocene human migrations in the Transbaikal, Russia and the Paleo-Sakhalin-Hokkaido-Kuril Peninsula
Outside Beringia: Why the Northeast Asian Upper Paleolithic Record Does Not Support a Long Standstill Model
After nearly a century searching for evidence of Pleistocene Americans, in the last decade new methods, data, and ideas have brought us closer to reaching a clearer understanding of Native American
Last Glacial Maximum Human Occupation of the Transbaikal, Siberia
We analyze the late Pleistocene radiocarbon chronology of the Transbaikal region of Siberia and conclude that humans inhabited the area during parts of the Last Glacial Maximum, but completely abandoned it between 24,800 and 22,800 cal yr BP. Moreover, the distinct contrast between non-microblade producing sites and those with microblades on either side of the radiocarbon gap suggests that the new technology arrived with recolonization
Lithics and climate: Technological responses to landscape change in Upper Palaeolithic northern Japan
Late Pleistocene Geology and Paleolithic Archaeology of the Shimaki Site, Hokkaido, Japan
Here, we assess geochronological, sedimentological, stratigraphic, and stone tool data from Shimaki, an Upper Paleolithic site in southeastern Hokkaido, Japan. Overall, we find that Shimaki's landscape context and flaked‐stone assemblage are similar to sites in Hokkaido that date to just before or at the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM). Based on several numerical ages, we suggest that the artifact‐bearing layer, including a wedge‐shaped core morpholog…
Comparative methods for distinguishing flakes from geofacts: A case study from the Wenas Creek Mammoth site
The alluvial history and sedimentary record of the Priiskovoe site and its place in the Paleolithic prehistory of Siberia
The Priiskovoe site in the Transbaikal Region of Siberia has long been considered one of the most ancient examples of the area's Middle Paleolithic. Priiskovoe and many other regional Paleolithic sites are part of a sequence of alluvial sediments found on or close to valley floor environments. We present several key pieces of evidence to suggest that Priiskovoe and its chipped‐stone assemblage are Upper Paleolithic in age. We examine the depositi…
The twilight of Paleolithic Siberia: Humans and their environments east of Lake Baikal at the late-glacial/Holocene transition
Radiocarbon dates, microblades and Late Pleistocene human migrations in the Transbaikal, Russia and the Paleo-Sakhalin-Hokkaido-Kuril Peninsula
