Amber workshops in Central Europe during the Early Iron Age. Technology, chemical analyses, and Amber Roads
The largest peak in the distribution of raw amber from the Baltic and the North Sea throughout European history can be identified in the middle of the 1st millennium BC. Raw amber was processed in the amber workshops the Early Iron Age (800–370 BC). This study reveals how these amber workshops can be reliably identified and what their distribution reveals about long-distance exchange systems in Europe. The amber was not only a strategic commodity…
Wagon or no Wagon
Grave mound 2 in Sankt Helena, community of Simmelsdorf, has provided insights into Early Iron Age burial practices. Due to the preservation of small organic material attached to bronze and iron artefacts, mound 2 quickly became one of the focal points of our research project (No 57601170). In addition, several wagon- and horse-gear-related objects were discovered in this burial mound, which led us to the question of whether a wagon was placed in…
A diachronic perspective on lithic raw material procurement strategies and mobility
Analysis of prehistoric lithic artefacts helps to answer a wide array of questions concerning archaeological contexts and prehistoric human behaviour. During three projects, we studied the origin of the raw materials of 32 inventories from the Late Glacial and Early Holocene in northwest and southern Germany. The basal petrographic analysis was conducted by the geologist and petro-archaeologist Jehanne Affolter. In addition, data of more than 60 …

Wood usage and its influence on the environment from the Neolithic until the Iron Age
The Western Altmark versus Flintbek – palaeoecological research on two megalithic regions
The Neolithic burial sequence at Flintbek LA 3, north Germany, and its cart tracks
Radiocarbon dating of 32 stratigraphic samples aided by Bayesian analysis has allowed the author to produce a high precision chronology for the construction and development of a continental Neolithic long barrow for the first time. She shows when and how quickly people living on the shore of the Baltic adopted pit graves, megalithic chambers and long barrows. Better than that, she provides a date for the famous cart tracks beneath the final barro…
Methodische Aspekte im Dialog
Der vorliegende Artikel diskutiert die Methoden und Datengrundlagen der Arbeit „Methodische Aspekte zur Rekonstruktion prähistorischer Besiedlungsmuster. Landschaftsgenese vom Ende des Neolithikums bis zur Eisenzeit im Gebiet des südlichen Oberrheins“ (Mischka, Freiburger Arch. Stud. 5, 2007). Ein Problem ist der Umgang mit ungenau datiertem Fundmaterial, hier zeigt die Arbeit neue und gleichzeitig einfach vermittelbare Wege auf
A Revision of Corded Ware Settlement Pattern –New Results from the Central European Low Mountain Range
The excavation of the Wattendorf-Motzenstein Corded Ware settlement in Franconia (Germany) has yielded new information with regard to the architecture, economy, and ritual activities, as well as the social organisation of Final Neolithic groups in Central Europe. The settlement is dated to 2660–2470 cal BC and was an agrarian community. Detailed analyses of the material culture combined with biological and pedological parameters allowed new inter…
